He was born December 14, 1944 in Brookhaven, MS and was 66 years of age. Mr. Charlie was a veteran local broadcaster for 50 years as the voice of WABL,1570-AM in Amite. Hart will be remembered for his unique, fun-style of local radio that was guaranteed to bring a smile to the face of any listener, including small children who laughed out loud at his dry but wacky humor. His meticulous local weather reporting literally put Amite on the map; Because of his fascination with and devotion to meteorology, WABL served as a National Weather Service reporting station, with an official rain gauge, barometer, and thermometer outside the building that housed the studios on Bankston Road. In September of 1985, new owners acquired the station and Hart became deeply involved in local news reporting, an avocation he maintained for the rest of his life. The late Tom Gillen of Baton Rouge, who literally founded the public relations industry in Louisiana in 1945, and veteran political activist Henry Harrison of Pumpkin Center, bought WABL to turn it into the flagship of a local news operation. For the next three years Hart worked closely with perennial local journalist Ken Benitez, a relationship that lasted until Hart's last day on Earth. He is survived by his 2 aunts, L'Na Cox, Amite and Cary Staton, Brandon, MS; numerous cousins and friends. Preceded in death by his mother and step-father, Leonora and Jesse Reynolds; father, Charles Hart; sister, Scarlett Reynolds. A graveside service will be held at a later date at Cold Springs Cemetery, Bogue Chitto, MS. McKneely Funeral Home, Amite, in charge of arrangements. The vehicle hit her and two of her three children as they walked on the Interstate 12 Service Road between Sonthiemer and Dunson roads east of Ponchatoula that Wednesday afternoon about 5:15. Andrew A. Hollie, 25, of 19330 SisterÕs Road, Ponchatoula, was later arrested by Tangipahoa Parish sheriffÕs deputies who had gotten an anonymous tip. He was booked into the parish jail on three counts of negligent injury and hit and run. Hart and the two children were taken to the hospital. HartÕs mother, Mrs. William Jordan, said Hart was out walking in preparation for the annual physical assessment of employees of the Florida Parishes Juvenile Detention Center. Jordan said she had taken her children with her. ÒShe managed to push the children out of the way and take the blow,Ó Jordan said. According to the sheriffÕs report, after hitting Hart and the children, Hollie allegedly stopped, saw them lying on the ground and then fled. Daughter Gaqavia Hart, 15, had a dislocated knee and scratches on her face. Brandon Mosely, 8, had bruises and scratches on his face. Breanna Mosely, 11, was pushed totally out of the path of the on coming mini van. Her other daughter, Gealesha Hart, 13, was not with the others at the time of the incident. District Attorney Scott Perrilloux said Thursday that in general, the allegations against Hollie could be upgraded, but without more specific information he would not know exactly what the new charges would be. They could be a higher degree of hit and run, possibly negligent homicide or even vehicular homicide if the defendant was using an illegal substance. Jordan described her daughter was a happy, outgoing person. She laughed a lot and was very generous with what she had. ÒHer generosity was such that she was an organ donor,Ó Jordan said. She had worked at the detention center for about three years and until recently had worked a second job at a convenience store-gas station. Hart was active in Macedonia Baptist Church of Hammond. Services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday at First True Love Church off Range Road in Ponchatoula. Jordan has five other children, Janice Hutchinson of Tylertown, Miss.; Jemilla Ricks of Baton Rouge and Gerard Nelson, Hyshan Nelson and Luciana Maryland, all of Hammond. *************************************************************************** Obituary published in The Hammond Daily Star on: 3/17/2002 HART, MABLE STARKEY Mable Starkey Hart, 90, died Friday, March 15, 2002, at her home in Hammond.
