She was a native of Hammond. She was a loving mother and friend and a member in long standing of Neely United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Friends of Zeta Amicae, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc., for more than 40 years. Survived by a daughter, Linda McCarthy, San Francisco; a daughter-in-law, Myrtle G. Williams; a grand- daughter, Cheryl Duncan and husband Johnnie Duncan; four grandsons, Capt. Shawn Williams and wife Virginia Williams, Fairfax, Va., Karl Williams and wife Ann Williams, Baton Rouge, and Wesley and Stanley McCarthy, both of San Francisco; five great-grandchildren, Brendon and Damien Wells and Ariel Duncan, all of Baton Rouge, and Katherine and Shawn Williams II, Fairfax; and numerous other relatives and friends. Preceded in death by father and mother, Alex and Lila Gordon; a son, Master Sgt. John Williams; a grandson, Gordon Williams; husband, John H. Hatcher; and son-in-law, Frederick McCarthy. A longtime Acadiana area newspaper sports and news writer and a resident of Lafayette, he died Thursday morning, Aug. 5, 1999, at Lafayette General Medical Center following a lengthy illness. He was 58, born Sept. 4, 1940, in Kentwood. He served in the U.S. Air Force for four years before starting his career as a news writer. He served as sports editor of the Daily Advertiser and then went to work for The Advocate newspaper in Baton Rouge for several years. As an Advocate employee, he later returned to Lafayette where he helped establish the Acadiana Bureau and served as chief for many years before retiring. While working for the Advertiser and Advocate, he covered primarily the University of Southwestern Louisiana sports events. He also contributed articles concerning the University of Southwestern Louisiana sports for Sports Illustrated and the Sporting News while working as a journalist. Visiting at Martin & Castille Funeral Home, 330 St. Landry, Lafayette, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, with religious services at 6 p.m. in La Chapelle, conducted by the Rev. Perry Sanders, pastor of First Baptist Church and the Rev. Ira Robinson of Asbury United Methodist Church. Visiting at Kentwood United Methodist Church, Kentwood, 10 a.m. until religious services at 3 p.m. Saturday. Interment in Woodland Cemetery. Survived by his wife, Flora Lee New Hatcher, Lafayette; a son, Jeff Hatcher and daughter-in-law, Julia Hatcher, Aurora, Ill.; a daughter, Julee Hatcher, Lafayette, and Eric Lerulier, a close friend who also served as his longtime nursing attendant; and three grandchildren, Madison McDonald, Lafayette, and J.C. Hatcher and Eliza Jane Hatcher, both of Aurora; two brothers, William Hatcher, Kentwood, and Ron Hatcher, Baton Rouge; two sisters, Margaret Milton and Connie Holmes, both of Kentwood; an aunt, Mary Jo Cutrer, Kentwood; three nephews and a niece. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jimmie Hatcher and Margaret Walker of Kentwood. Pallbearers will be Chris Rosa, Bobby Ardoin, Todd Manuel, Mark Cunco, Jimmy Hatcher and Bobby Bonin. He was a graduate of Kentwood High School and McNeese State University. He was a longtime member of the Louisiana Sports Writers Association and was honored by the organization with a lifetime membership after working for several newspapers, including the Lake Charles bureau of the Beaumont Enterprise, The Advocate and the Lafayette Daily Advertiser. His involvement with the University of Southwestern Louisiana athletics included serving as a member of the USL Foundation, and he was also a member of the Louisiana Classics program. He was a coach of the Lake Charles Stevedores, an American Legion baseball team, and was active in Lafayette's youth recreation baseball program, where he served as an administrator. He was a member of Kentwood Masonic Lodge No. 248 and Lafayette Chapter No. 46 of the Order of the Eastern Star. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to Kentwood United Methodist Church, Asbury United Methodist Church of Lafayette and the First Baptist Church of Lafayette Building Fund. He was 73, a native and resident of Kentwood. He was a retired dairyman, cattle buyer, operated a trucking company for more than 50 years, and a member of the Board of Louisiana Quarter Horse and Breeders Association. He enjoyed visiting each day at his office with friends while sharing a cup of coffee. He cherished his family and was proud of their accomplishments. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Betty McDaniel Hatcher; son, Jimmie Hatcher and wife Barbara, Kentwood; two grandsons, Major Hatcher, Hammond and Justin Hatcher, all of Kentwood; two sisters, Margaret Milton and husband Sonny, and Connie Holmes and husband Denson, all of Kentwood; brother, Ronnie Hatcher, Gonzales; sister-in-law, Flo Hatcher, Lafayette. Preceded in death by his parents, J.C. "Pap" and Margaret "Bit" Hatcher; and a brother, Jules Hatcher. Pallbearers will be Houston Travis, Jeff Green, Chris Blanchet, Wendell Anthony, David Easley, David Gill, Wayne McNabb and Douglas Palmintier. Honorary pallbearers are E.H.
