Tirie Thomas Hendricks peacefully departed this Earthly life Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2011, in Jennings. Tirie was born Nov. 14, 1921, in Blanton, Ala., the seventh son of Ethel Almada Eastridge Hendricks and James Moses Hendricks. Orphaned during the Great Depression, Tirie and his siblings formed deep bonds of love and respect for one another, which they maintained throughout their lives. He served his country honorably in the U.S. Army during World War II in the 139th Airborne Engineer Battalion, 17th Airborne Division, in the Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. Tirie fought in the pivotal Battle of the Bulge, crossing the Rhine in a glider. The C-47s towing the gliders had the terrible misfortune of flying over a concentration of German anti-aircraft weapons, and Tirie's gilder was riddled with holes prior to landing, yet every man in his glider survived. Tirie was awarded the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Meal with three service stars and the American Defense Service Meal with bronze service bar. Tirie enjoyed gardening, working outside, fishing, building things and cooking. He enjoyed befriending people and helping others where he perceived a need. Tirie was a devoted family man. After his military service, Tirie owned Hendricks Saw Filing Shop in Baton Rouge and later worked in insurance sales and branch office management. He leaves to cherish his memory a daughter, Teresa Hendricks Chambers and fiancŽ Michael Sterling Keppler, of Houston; and granddaughters, Jennifer Nicole Chambers and Julie Marie Chambers, also of Houston.
