Claude Edward Henkel Sr. died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2005, at the age of 77 from complications of Parkinson's disease. His life's hope was that others could see Jesus shining in his life. He honored his Lord daily during 37 years of pastoral ministry in the Methodist and United Methodist churches throughout Louisiana. As World War II was ending, he served for 20 months in the U.S. Navy. He graduated from LSU and Candler School of Theology. During his pastorates, he was active in Masons, various service clubs, community activities and Eastern Star. The most difficult moment of his professional life came in 1970, when the public schools of Tensas Parish were integrated. Against the advice of most church members, who were sincerely concerned for the welfare of his children, he re-enrolled them in the public schools. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Carol Weller Henkel, Amite; five children and their spouses, Edward Jr. and Mary Gillette Henkel, Stuttgart, Ark., Curtis and Ann Henkel Eluert, Richmond, Texas, Clint and Janet Henkel Smith, Tillamook, Ore., Rob and Mary Henkel Morrison, Rock Hill, S.C., and Mitch and Rachel Henkel Spruill, Cumming, Ga.; eight "grands" and honorary "grands," Angel Avila, Maitland, Fla., Indio Avila, Richmond, Elizabeth, Stephanie, Katherine and Charles Henkel, all of Stuttgart, Joshua and Natasha Morrison, Myrtle Beach, S.C., Katie Morrison, Garden City, S.C.; sister, Margaret Stafford Edwards, Baton Rouge; and a brother, John Harmon Henkel, Athens, Ga.
