On Saturday, Aug. 1, 2009, his journey complete, he stood before his Heavenly Father with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, standing alongside him as his passport into Heaven. Poppa is now playing his music and singing in praise and adoration of the One who gave His blood for him. Sharing the joy of his Homecoming are his first wife, his parents, his brothers, sisters and grandparents, as well as a host of other relatives and many friends who had arrived before him. Mr. Clarence will be reserving places at the Wedding Feast of Our Lord for his loving wife of some 27 years, Almedia Jewell "Julie" Hermann, his two sons, Nickolas Ray Hermann, of Albany, and wife Robbie; U.S. Navy Petty Officer First Class Charles Edward Hermann, of Gulfport, Miss., and wife Mary; three daughters, Barbara Ann Sloan, of Independence, her husband William; Irena Kay Rodriguez, of Woodstock, Ga., her husband Anibal; Judith Marie Hermann, of Albany; a stepdaughter, Sandra Roxanne Hawkins, of Manchester, Tenn., and husband Keith; and a very special stepdaughter, Twila Tullier and husband Ronnie of Brusly, who was her Poppa's beloved care-giver; a sister, Helen Bollinger, of California; a sister-in-law, Loretta Hermann, of Hammond, wife of Louis; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In this Earthly life, Clarence proudly defended our country for nine years during World War II and in Korea. He served as a member of the U.S. Navy's underwater demolition teams where he reached the rank of petty officer first class. He returned to Hammond in 1957 and began working with his brother, Louis, as an auto mechanic at the L&L Auto Repair Shop on the corner of Oak and Hansen streets in Hammond. He became a partner, then owner/operator of the business and was well-known as an honest mechanic who gave more value than the charges warranted. He retired and closed the one-man shop on Aug. 20, 1986. In retirement he donated many selfless hours to FPJDC and Crossgate Church in Robert, where he remained a member until God's angels carried him home. Clarence gave equipment, material, supplies, money and all of his energy to assist in the recovery efforts carried out through Crossgate during the months immediately following Hurricane Katrina, even though his body and mind had already begun to betray him. The deceased has requested no funeral services be held. A celebration of his life will be held at Crossgate Church, 22494 U.S. 190 East in Robert, on Saturday, Aug. 8, from 5 p.m. until a memorial service at 7 p.m. with Louis Husser, pastor, officiating. We will gather for music and memories. All who knew him are invited to attend. Please join us at that time and swap stories and share your favorite memories of our beloved Poppa and your friend over his favorite beverage, Community Coffee. Clarence loved life and children and he loved to watch living things grow, therefore he requested that no living thing give its life in his honor. His request is, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to Crossgate Church, P.O. Box 470, Robert, LA 70455, in his memory and dedicated to God's mission ministry in Bonao, Dominican Republic. The C.E. Hermann family offers their heartfelt thanks to all of Clarence's doctors, those on staff at Clarity Hospice, Baton Rouge and Lakeview Home Health, who helped make Poppa's last days more comfortable and less painful for him. We also thank all of those who lifted Clarence up to the Lord in their prayers throughout his illness. May God bless you each and all.
