"DOC" Dr. R.P. Herrington Jr. died Monday, April 9, 2001, of leukemia at Veterans Memorial Hospital. Visitation at McKneely Funeral Home, Kentwood, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday. Religious services at the funeral home at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Dr. Herrington, a retired optometrist, was the loving husband of the late Jewel Thomas Yarbrough Herrington, who was of Kentwood. Survivors include three sons, R.P. "Bobby" Herrington III of Jackson, Miss., Ray Hubert Herrington of Raymond, Miss., and Roy Ponder Herrington of Fannin, Miss.; a daughter, Hilda Herrington Askew of Jackson, Miss.; a sister, Dorothy Dahm of Biloxi, Miss.; 10 grandchildren and two great-grand- daughters. He was a graduate of the University of Mississippi and Southern College of Optometry, Memphis, Tenn. Some of his greatest achievements included proudly serving his country as an officer in the U.S. Navy during World War II, where he survived the Pearl Harbor attack on Dec. 7, 1941; and having served under and accompanied Adm. Byrd on a South Pole expedition. Dr. Herrington was an avid sportsman, a championship archer and an inventor of "the Pod," bow-hunting equipment. According to Doc, his greatest accomplishment was his family. He died at 10:50 p.m. on Friday, March 4, 2005, at in Roseland. He was 41, a native of Kentwood and a resident of Independence. Visitation at McKneely Funeral Home, Amite, from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Sunday, March 6, and from 8 a.m. Monday, March 7, until religious service at 10 a.m., conducted by the Rev. Heath Rohner. Interment in Tangipahoa Cemetery, Tangipahoa. He is survived by his wife, Tammie Crose Herrington, Independence; three sons, Randy Lee Herrington, South Carolina, Kelly Herrington, stationed in South Carolina, and Justin Bass Herrington, Pumpkin Center; stepdaughters, Rebecca Hazel Breaux and Krystal Ashton Breaux, both of Independence; sister, Cristy Herrington Sharp, Hammond; three brothers, Ben Ray Herrington Jr., Kodiak, Tenn., Timothy Gene Herrington and Michael Bass Herrington, both of Kentwood; mother, Joyce Colleen Bass, Amite; father, Ben Ray Herrington Sr., Roseland; and stepfather, George Carlton Bond, Amite.
