She was a native of Greensburg and a member of St. James AME Church, Hammond. A salute to her was published in January of 1981 in The Hammond Vindicator. She is survived by one sister, Louise Nelson of Hammond. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar Hess; and her parents, Dan Nelson and Sebell Montgomery Nelson. Visitation will be Friday at N.A. James Funeral Home, Hammond, from 4 to 9 p.m. The Rev. Mack C. Hurst will conduct the funeral Saturday at Greater St. James AME Church, Hammond, at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Hammond. *************************************************************************** Obituary published in The Hammond Daily Star on: 8/21/2008 HESS, CLEMENT JOHN "CJ" CJ passed away peacefully at home while surrounded by his loving family on Monday, August 18, 2008. He was 84 years old. He was a native of Iowa City, Iowa, having lived in Royal Oak, Michigan and New Orleans, Louisiana prior to his current residence in Hammond, Louisiana. CJ graduated from St. Patrick's High School and the University of Iowa in Iowa City. He was a shining example of "The Greatest Generation". CJ was a decorated war hero, answering "the call" out of high school and serving his beloved country in World War II, receiving The Distinguished Flying Cross. He also served in the Korean Conflict and continued to serve his country during his career. As a quality control specialist, he worked for Chrysler Defense, General Dynamics and Martin Marietta on: defense missile programs, the booster for the Apollo lunar programs, the M60 - M1 and Abrams tank programs as well as the solid fuel system for the space shuttle program. A member of the Knight of Columbus in Sterling Heights, Michigan, CJ was also a member of the National American Legion. A dedicated family man, CJ was an exceptionally wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend. He had a way of forming a special bond with each family member and sharing a unique part of himself. CJ loved his Iowa Hawkeyes, New Orleans Saints and St. Louis Cardinals; but above all, he loved spending time with his family. His treasured wife of 57 years, Marilyn Mae Howard Hess, survives him along with two daughters, Janna Lynne Rode, Suzanne Dee Howe and husband, Bob; four sons, James Charles Hess and wife Mary, Matthew Howard Hess and wife Patricia, John Clement Hess and wife Linda, and William Robert Hess. He leaves behind one brother, Robert L. Hess and his wife Jackie. CJ is also survived by his grandchildren, Erin and her husband Jesse Fiorello, Megan Rode, Jimmy, Matthew and Christopher Hess, Rebecca and Samantha Howe, Sara Hess, Ryan and Andrea Hess and Maggie Hess. Son of the late Robert and Blanche Hess, he was also preceded in death by one grandchild, Lindsey N. Hess and four sisters, Delores, Christine, Patricia, JoAnne. Johanna was the daughter of Jewette and Thanie Stafford Mizell. She was a 1955 graduate of Bogalusa High School and a 1959 graduate of Southeastern Louisiana College, where she received a bachelor's degree in elementary education and later a master's plus 30 in education. She spent the majority of her career in Tangipahoa Parish, teaching at Holy Ghost, Loranger, and Natalbany schools as an elementary teacher. She also taught at Pine Grove and later in Starkville, Miss., as her husband attended graduate school. She spent the latter years of her professional career as a Title I supervisor and retired in 2000. She is survived by her husband, George Hess, of Hammond; son, Stephen, of Ponchatoula; and daughter, Thanette Hess Hunsberger and her husband, Alan, of Watson. She has five grandchildren, Nicole and husband Shane Harris, Ashley Hunsberger, Scott Hess, Shanna Lambert and Cole Lambert; and a great-granddaughter. She is also survived by two brothers, Maddox and wife Marie Mizell, of Metairie, and Billy Ray and wife Mildred Mizell, of Bogalusa; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by her parents, Jewette and Thanie; and an infant brother, Henry. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Red Hat Ladies, Tangi Travelers, Shanghai Card Club and the Y-Knots Square Dance Club. She volunteered many hours at North Oaks Medical Center, Hammond. She enjoyed traveling with George and vacation trips with her traveling group. Johanna spent the last month of her life at the Richard Murphy Hospice House, where she received exceptional care. Many thanks go to their caring staff. The family also wishes to sincerely thank her many friends, associates and colleagues for all their care and support.
