"POPS" A resident of Kentwood, he died at 9:45 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2011, at Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center in McComb, Miss. He was 84, born Nov. 11, 1926, in McComb. He was a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, a Masonic lodge, Fraternal Order of Police, the American Legion and Civil Air Patrol. He served in the armed services in the Army Air Corps, Navy, and Coast Guard during World War II and the Korean War. He was a graduate of Southeastern Louisiana University with a degree in accounting, and worked 12 years for Baton Rouge city police. Visitation at Line Creek Baptist Church, Kentwood, Thursday, Oct. 27, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Visiting resumes at the church Friday, Oct. 28, from 8 a.m. until religious services at 11 a.m., conducted by the Rev. Ken Irvin. Interment in Woodland Cemetery, Kentwood. He is survived by his wife, Abbie Muse Hilburn, Kentwood; her son, Bill Whitney, Jacksonville, Fla.; brother, Robert E. Hilburn and his wife, Gerry, Baton Rouge; nephews, Bobby and Greg Hilburn; and great-nieces, Savannah and Chelsey. He was preceded in death by his parents, Luther A. Hilburn and Lula Knight Hilburn. He was 77 and a a native of Kentwood. Visiting at Zoar Baptist Church, Central, La., on Friday, May 25, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday, May 26, from 9 a.m. until religious service at 11 a.m., conducted by Bro. Glen Miers. Interment in Port Hudson National Cemetery. Survived by his wife, Geraldine B. Hilburn (married 53 years); sons, Robert E. Hilburn II, Baton Rouge, and Gregory A. Hilburn, New Iberia, La.; and three grandchildren, Cody Hilburn, Chelsey Hilburn and Savannah Hilburn. Preceded in death by his father, Luther Hilburn; mother, LuLa Hilburn; brother, Allen "Pops" Hilburn; uncle, Luther Knight. Pallbearers will be Russell Cook, Bobby Harrison, Kent Fabre, Michael Danna, Cody Hilburn and Dan Duran. He graduated from Kentwood High School, Kentwood, La., (1953), served in U.S. Army, 17th Inf Regiment of the 7th Infantry Division in Korea (1953-54), attended SLU in Hammond, and joined Baton Rouge Police Department in 1956. He married Geraldine Brasseaux Hilburn on Oct. 18, 1958. He resigned BRCP and joined Louisiana State Police in 1965. He graduated from Northwestern Traffic Institute, Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., in 1972. He retired from State Police in 1984 and worked at Capital Police and Department of Agriculture in later years before retiring again. He spent spare time travelling and antiquing, working in the yard and doing countless odd jobs here and there.
