She was surrounded by her family at the time of her death. Born on July 8, 1921, in Independence, she was preceded in death by her parents, Marguerite "Mimi" Emily Robertson, who also was born in Independence, and Samuel Albert Callari, who was born in Vicari, Sicily, Italy. She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Homer Hitt, founding chancellor of the University of New Orleans; two daughters, Dian Hitt Mains and Louvin Hitt Skinner, and their husbands, Jimmy Mains and Robert John Skinner; brother, Barry Callari and his wife, Stuart. She was the aunt of Kerry, Keith, Kim and Karen Callari, all of Southport, N.C., and Judy Deshotel, beloved grandmother of Stephanie Douglas Skinner and her fiance, David Leefe, Johanna Margaret Skinner, Lee Sanders Cummins and her husband, George, Caroline Helena Skinner, Dian "Tossy" Sanders Fogle and her husband, Adam, and Susannah Skinner Pedalino and her husband, David. Longtime residents of Baton Rouge and New Orleans, Dougie and Homer retired to Bay St. Louis, Miss., several years ago. In 1959, she graduated from LSU with a bachelor of fine arts degree. Homemaker, artist, voracious reader, storyteller and hostess, Dougie lived with grace and courage. All, especially family and friends, to whom she devoted herself selflessly, will sorely miss her. Visitation at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 6249 Canal Blvd., on Thursday, May 3, from 1:30 p.m. until service at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to St. Paul's or the UNO Foundation.
