A lifelong resident of Amite, he was born to Benjamin Louis Holden and Rebecca Brown Holden on Sept. 24, 1922, in Bertie, the fourth of nine children. He entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2007, at 5:15 a.m. at LSU Lallie Kemp Hospital in Independence. He was 85. Visiting at Israelite Baptist Church, Independence, on Friday, Dec. 7, was from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Visiting continues at the church on Saturday, Dec. 8, from 8 a.m. until service at 10 a.m. Burial in Holden Cemetery, Amite. He was a member of Israelite Baptist Church in Independence, where he served faithfully as a member of the senior choir for many years, a Sunday school and Bible study teacher, a deacon and trustee, and church treasurer. At the age of 19, he heeded the call to serve his country and entered the U.S. Army in 1942, serving in northern France until 1946. Upon his return home, he married his sweetheart, Linnie Atkins, on Aug. 19, 1946. To this union, seven children were born. Brother Alvin, as he was affectionately known, lived a long and fruitful life, not as a follower, but as a leader, always striving to make things better wherever he saw the need. Upon his return from World War II, he joined the fight for civil rights and integration, a desire that grew out of the discrimination he had faced in his early life, while fighting for his country as well as when he returned home from the war. He became a founding, and was the last surviving, original member of the Tangipahoa Parish Voters League, an organization that fought to obtain the precious right to vote and equal treatment for African Americans. He led the fight in federal court and became the first African American to register to vote in the parish. Brother Alvin was an avid reader who believed that education was truly the key to success and equality. To that end he helped lead the fight for the integration of public schools in the parish. He stressed to his children that education was an obligation, not just a right. When West Side High School was established for African Americans in Amite in 1955, he became the first president of the PTA and served in that capacity for many years. During that time he took advantage of the newly established Adult Education Program and obtained his own high school diploma. That diploma afforded him the opportunity to become the first African American to serve as a campus police officer at Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond. He served in that post for 15 years until his retirement in 1987. He continued his education in retirement by attending the Louisiana Technical College in Hammond, where he completed the 60-hour course in automotive technology, an accomplishment he had been denied when he returned from the war because African-Americans were not allowed to train as auto mechanics. Brother Alvin loved to watch things grow and prosper, as a result of growing up as a sharecropper's son. He spent the majority of his retirement returning to his roots and became a truck farmer. He grew and provided fresh vegetables to his "customers," family and friends throughout the parish. He even won numerous blue ribbons at the Tangipahoa Parish Free Fair for his prized sweet potatoes and other vegetables. His many memberships and associations included, but were not limited to, the Tangipahoa Parish Voters League; the West Side High School PTA; American Legion Post 564, where he was adjutant and later post commander; Local Union 3177 (United Brotherhood of Carpenters & Joiners of America); Northlake Community Development Corp., where he served on the board of directors; and the 3rd District Bogue Chitto Evangelical Board, where he served as a teacher. He leaves to cherish his life and legacy a devoted wife of 61 years, Linnie Atkins Holden; his children and their spouses, Rose M. Williams, of New Orleans, Annie H. and Bertel Lewis, of Baton Rouge, Brenda H. and Herbert Bolden, of Houston, Althea H. and Willie Glen Thompson, of Kenner, Carolyn H. and Richard Singleton, of Baton Rouge, Alvin Kenneth Jr. and Cheryl Holden, of Barstow, Calif., and Debra G. Holden, of Baton Rouge; a sister, Lena Holden and spouse Napoleon Hines, of Independence; 17 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin and Rebecca Holden; four brothers, Benjamin Louis Holden Jr., James Horace Holden, Leonard Percy Holden and Charlie Holden; and three sisters, Veola Holden Brock, Rosa Holden Callahan and Genevieve Holden Bates. *************************************************************************** Obituary published in The Advocate (Baton Rouge) on: 10/6/2011 HOLDEN, BETTY J.
