Interment in the church cemetery. *************************************************************************** Obituary published in The Advocate (Baton Rouge) on: 9/24/2009 HOLMES, NELL CLARISSIE MATHERNE Nell Clarissie Matherne Kernan Holmes was the only child of Lovincy A. and Clarissie Hutchinson Matherne, born Dec. 11, 1922, in Pumpkin Center. She went home with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Saturday, Sept. 19, 2009, at 2:25 a.m. A lifelong Christian, Nell was "born again" when she was 12 years old at First Baptist Church in Baton Rouge. Active in her church and in prison ministry, Nell was a witness to all who knew her of the love of Jesus. She lived her faith by sharing with others the love of the Lord and always setting an example of a true Christian for others to see. She was a happy, funny, precious wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She was active in First New Testament Church until her illness prevented her from attending. She grew up in Baton Rouge and attended Baton Rouge Schools. She graduated from Baton Rouge High School in 1941 and was a graduate of Spencer Business College. She was also a graduate of Bob Brooks School of Real Estate and a former Realtor and member of the Greater Baton Rouge Association of Realtors and the National Association of Realtors. She worked for the military on various Army Air Forces bases throughout the U.S. during World War II as well as for the state of Louisiana. After her marriage she was a stay-at-home mom. After her children were grown, she worked for 14 years as a Realtor with her daughter, Clarissie Holmes Penny. Nell and Clarissie were one of the first mother-daughter real estate teams in Baton Rouge. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, pastors Malcolm R. and Esther W. Holmes, of Denham Springs; daughter, Clarissie Holmes Penny, of Baton Rouge; four grand- children, Melody Holmes Sherrod, of Walker, Janell Penny Schexnaydre and her husband, Travis Schexnaydre, of Baton Rouge, Joanie Coxwell and her husband, Frank Coxwell, and John Goen and his wife, Tanya, of Jackson, Miss.; great-grandchildren, Brooklyn and Karley Sherrod, Tyler and Cooper Schexnaydre, Ashley and Josh Berry, Rachel Coxwell, Paige and Zane Goen; a niece, Janie Lusk Williams and her husband, Mike Williams; and a nephew, Joel Holmes Lusk and his wife, DeDe. She was preceded in death by her parents, L.A. "Shorty" and Clarissie "Clara" Matherne; first husband, Joseph A. Kernan, who was killed in World War II; and second husband of 56 years the love of her life, Malcolm R. Holmes Sr. A special thanks to all the wonderful individual sitters, St. Joseph Hospice and their staff, and Angels Are We Sitter Service, who through the years helped make it possible for Nell to remain at home through her lengthy illness. Tickfaw -- Oscar Holmes Sr., 98, died Thursday, March 3, 2005, at North Oaks Medical Center, Hammond. He was a native of Liberty, Miss., and was retired from Clemmons Forest Products.
