He was born October 13, 1918 in Liverpool, Louisiana, the third of thirteen children born to the late Albert and Lela Taylor Hookfin. He was the husband of the late Mary Holloway Hookfin for 68 years and the father of fifteen children, eleven of whom are living. Daddy was a long time member of the Oak Grove A.M.E. Church. He attended regularly until his hearing was greatly diminished then lost. He treasured and looked forward to first Sunday's when communion would be delivered by his pastor and or, Reverend Wardell Dyson and other members of the church. He attended school in Greenlaw, (north of Kentwood) and later attended Tangipahoa Training School where he loved learning. This love for learning continued up until the day he died, demonstrated by reading the local newspaper, especially the questions to doctors Donohue, Gott, Rosemond and other contributors. Their opinions became his opinions and his doctors were sure to be doubted if they did not agree with them. He served in World War II from December 1942 Ð September 1945 with the 569th Port Company United States Army in Rome, Southern France, and the Rhineland. He was believed to be the oldest living African-American WWII veteran in Tangipahoa Parish. Daddy greatly enjoyed his children and was overjoyed at the birth of twin great grandchildren 1 year ago. He also enjoyed 'the boys of summer' (baseball). At the time of his death he was still driving, he mowed the lawn (riding) and still tinkered in his fix it shop. In fact, ten to fifteen years ago, daddy was considered a 'Jack of all trades', dependable as his sister, sisters-in-law, widows, cousins and people of the community can testify, when all else fails you could call Henry Hookfin (Poppa Stoppa). Just a few weeks ago he tried his hand at the computer! He leaves to cherish his memories: Four sons Henry Earl Hookfin, Sr. and wife Tamalia, Paul Ellis Hookfin and Ivy Lee Hookfin and wife Shelia, of Kentwood, LA; Melvin Hudson and wife Patricia Taylor, Chicago, IL. Seven daughters: Lillie Mae Brumfield, Kentwood, Juanita Johnson, Henrietta L. Jackson, Lessie M. Hookfin and Antoinette Brown and husband Bobby, all of Baton Rouge, LA; Ruby Lee Hookfin of Washington, DC; and Mary Lee Soniat of Kenner, LA; A special son from another mother Chuck Tillis. One sister, Katie V. Griffin of Baton Rouge, two brothers Charlie Hookfin of San Francisco, CA and Lamar Hookfin and wife Janice of Springfield, OH., Three sisters-in-law, Doris Hookfin, Katie Hookfin and Sarah Hookfin in LA; One first cousin, Ethel Mae Earl. Twenty-one (21) grandchildren, a host of great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, four children, Gloria Jean, Patricia and two still births, a grandson Bobby Brumfield, He was preceded in death by three sisters: Marie Gordon, Louise Wells, and Albertha Cage, five brothers: Lonnie, Luther, Joseph, John, and Edward Hookfin.
