She passed away Saturday, Jan. 8, 2011, at her daughter's home in Plano, Texas. She was a devoted wife, mother, daughter, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and Christian and will be missed by all who knew her. Iris attended Live Oak High School, finishing in the top of her class and is believed to have been the oldest living graduate of the school at the time of her death. Foremost in her life was a strong, practicing Christian faith. She witnessed to people wherever she went and taught Bible classes most of her life. Her career pursuits took her to New Orleans where she met and married Quentin J. MatteI. They raised and educated three children while in New Orleans. Iris' husband passed away in 1967. In the early days of television, Iris did "live" cooking demonstrations in New Orleans for O'Keef and Meritt, an appliance manufacturer. This was an innovative sales technique for that day and time. Later in life she married Thomas Hooks, a Georgia native, whom she met while working in the furniture business. They settled in Baton Rouge and established a successful furniture business, maintaining a sales booth in the World Trade Center in Dallas. Her husband passed away in 1998. Iris continued living in Baton Rouge and became an active member of Jefferson Baptist Church, teaching a Bible class as long as her health permitted. Failing health and hurricane damage to her home forced her to reside with her daughter in Plano. Iris was preceded in death by her parents, John Sidney and Maybelle Fore Garrison; sister, Marjorie Ann Garrison; husband, Quentin J. MatteI, and husband, Thomas Hooks; grandson, David Conn; and son-in-law, Thad Conn. She is survived by daughters, Elizabeth MatteI Adam and husband Dean, of Baldwin, Mo., and Carolyn MatteI Conn, of Plano; son, Quentin J. MatteI Jr., of Houston; sister, Beth Foster, of Watson; brother, Sidney M. Garrison and wife Dorothy, of Denham Springs; grandchildren, Corey Adam Reid, Leslie Adam Jaruis and Cindy Adam Meadow, all of Baldwin, Rachel Conn Cole and husband Toby, of Plano, Jason Conn and wife Nicole, of Loranger, and Jeanne MatteI Zorch and Rene MatteI Roach, both of Kingwood, Texas; sister-in-law, Joyce Mattel Fanilaro, of New Orleans; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, great-grandchildren and a host of friends. A memorial service honoring Wilma "Iris" Garrison MatteI Hooks will be held at Jefferson Baptist Church, 9135 Jefferson Highway, on Monday, Jan. 24, at 10:30 a.m., with Dr. Tommy French presiding. Friends and relatives are invited through this medium. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Jefferson Baptist Church. *************************************************************************** File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/la/tangipahoa/obits/obitssur/hooks.txt
