He was born Jan. 13, 1931, in Bayou Barbary, and was a native of Livingston Parish. Abram was a U.S. Army veteran, a retired lieutenant from the Baton Rouge Police Department and owner of S&H Wide Load Escort Service. He was a member of Central Baptist Church and the Fraternal Order of Police. Visitation at Seale Funeral Home, Denham Springs, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, Jan. 31, and from noon until service at 2 p.m. Tuesday. Dr. B.G. Buchanan and the Rev. Zack Winningham will lead the service. His body will be laid to rest at Pine Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Bayou Barbary. Pallbearers will be Mark, Daniel, Todd and Rocky Hoover, Billy Mattingly and Benjamin Horne. He leaves behind his wife of 33 years, Shirley Jean Hoover, and Danielle Vincent, a child who they were raising as their own; three daughters and sons-in-law, Debra and Bill Graham of Marion, Iowa, and Karen and Robert Patterson and Suzanne and Paul Jerome, all of Denham Springs; three sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald and Sharon Hoover, Atlanta, Floyd and Janice Hoover, St. Francisville, and Kevin and Vonda Hoover, Denham Springs; brother, Atwood Hoover of California; two sisters, Virgie Hoover of California and Muriel Lavigne of Albany; special cousin, Doris Hoover Johnston of Hammond; 13 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Donald worked for his brother, Berton Hoover, in the Western Auto Store from age 13 until age 27. Then he became a Tangipahoa Parish Deputy for Sheriff Tom Sanders. Donald later worked as a salesman for Community Coffee after which he then worked as a warehouse supervisor for Jack Core Distributing Company later named Florida Parishes Beverages. Donald never met a stranger and always spoke his mind whether you liked it or not. Donald leaves behind his loving wife of 53 years, Sue Sanders Hoover; daughter, Denise Hoover Wilson and husband Tim of Ponchatoula; son, Donald Duane Hoover of Ponchatoula, along with two special grandchildren, Hannah Marie Wilson of Ponchatoula and Brandon Keith Wilson of Ponchatoula. He was 73 and a former longtime resident of Baton Rouge and Amite. A mentor to all, he challenged everyone to be all they could be and used his education as tools in his life's ministry. Dr. Hoover obtained a bachelor's degree in chemistry, a master's degree in entomology from LSU and a Ph.D. in education from the University of Texas. He was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. In addition, he completed a fellowship program from Oak Ridge Institute of Nuclear Studies. A member of Blackwater United Methodist Church, he was a Sunday school teacher for 25 years and a lay minister for the Louisiana United Methodist Conference. He served 33 years in the military, serving during the Korean and Vietnam wars. Mr. Hoover is preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 38 years, Lucille Schmidt Hoover, two sisters, Harriett Hoover Doggette, Martha Ann Cooley, and a brother, Lucian Hoover. He is survived by four daughters, Kimberly Anne Hoover McManus, Smiths Station, AL, Karen Anne Cooper (Michael) of DeRidder, LA, Suzanne Marget Hoover, of Smiths Station, AL, and Kathryn Calhoun of Columbus, GA; four sons, Hunter Smallwood Hoover, Jr. (Christine) of Mandeville, LA, Tod Joseph Hoover (Michelle) of Green Cove Springs, FL, Byron Thomas Hoover (Cecy), San Antonio, TX, and Warren Robert Hoover (Ginger) of Columbus, GA; one brother, James Perry Hoover (Lois Harrison Hoover), Ponchatoula, LA, 15 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. *************************************************************************** Obituary published in The Advocate (Baton Rouge) on: 3/25/2003 HOOVER, IRENE ELEANOR SMALLWOOD 103 years of age, a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother, she passed away Sunday, March 23, 2003, at her residence in Belle Chasse. Ms. Irene graduated from Hammond High School in 1918. Following graduation, she taught school in Tangipahoa Parish at Chesbrough and Romes Ferry, traveling from school to school by horse and buggy. She was a member of the Belle Chasse Methodist Church. She is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, James Perry and Lois Harrison Hoover of Ponchatoula, and Hunter Smallwood Hoover of Columbus, Ga.; a daughter and son-in-law, Irene Hoover and Jordan D. Doggette of Belle Chasse; a son-in-law, Dr. Norman V. Cooley II of San Diego; 17 grand- children, 30 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. She will be sadly missed by her family and a host of friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Byron James Hoover; a daughter, Martha Ann Hoover Cooley; a son, Lucien Hoover; a daughter-in-law, Margaret S. Hoover; and three sisters, Letha Darouse Somers, and twins Myra Smallwood Herbert and Mary Smallwood Darouse. Visitation at Geisler Funeral Home chapel, Hammond, from 10 a.m. Thursday, March 27, 2003, until funeral service at 1 p.m., conducted by the Rev. Alford Bakewell.
