He was 53, born Sept. 24, 1954. Dwain survived a diving accident at the age of 15 which resulted in him being paralyzed for the past 37 years. He attended college at the University of New Orleans. He enjoyed raising his nephew, Bucklee, reading Westerns, listening to music, playing games and helping raise his cousins' kids. He loved the computer and enjoyed communicating with friends from all over the world on the Internet. Dwain was survived by his sister, Nancy Hughes Francis and husband Ron, of Kentwood; nephew, Bucklee DeWayne Crowe and wife Ratih "Annisa," Amite; his special kids, Tome, Stormy, Lance, Shaina, Kaston and future baby McCoy; sisters, Elizabeth Smith, Albany, and Fannie Allen, Kentwood; parenting aunts, Joyce and Polly Travis; substitute mother, Mary Lee Pounds; a special friend, Andrea Fociuc; and numerous cousins and friends. Dwain was preceded in death by his mother, Nettie Travis Steele; stepfather, Sam Steele Sr.; father, Shelby Aubrey Hughes; sister, Frankie Jo Williams; grandparents, Lee and Eula Travis and Elmer and Francis Hughes; and brother-in- law, Dennis "Wayne" Crowe. Robert Hughes of Husser, a former ship captain for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and 32nd degree Mason, who died on Oct. 13, 1980; three brothers and two sisters, most recently, Wallace Bahm, who died on May 20, 2000; her father, Robert "Buzzy" Bahm, who had managed Zemurray Park in the 1930s; and her mother, Odeal "Aunt Deal" Sylvest. Ella was noted for her expertise in local genealogy, and was an accomplished writer of numerous books to include, "Husser Happenings of Long Ago," "The Hughes of Tangipahoa Parish," "Old Sharon Church," "Melinda's Journey," "Harry's Letters Home," and "Uncle Buzzy's Folk Stories." She also had written periodic commentaries and articles for various Hammond and Amite newspapers. She had been well known in Norfolk as an artist and accomplished horticulturalist. She served as president of the Hyde Park Garden Club, was a lifetime member of the Virginia State Garden Club, and a member of the National Rose Society. Ella and Dorothy Hughes founded the New Sharon Baptist Church in Husser in 1944, and she was deeply committed to its support. She is survived by her son, retired Lt. Col. Patrick R.
