John "Shady" Hurst, 78, died Thursday, June 10, 2004. A retired Air Force sergeant and veteran of three wars, Hurst was a dairy and cattle farmer, swimming pool contractor and pilot. Associated with the Federal Aviation Administration for 50 years, Hurst was also a licensed and ordained Baptist pastor and minister. He was a volunteer missionary for the Baptist Home and Foreign Mission boards and was founder and developer of the interdenominational Christian facility Inspiration Park. Hurst is survived by his wife, Angie Simmons Hurst; two daughters, Nedra Hurst Carter of Greenville, Miss., and Bonnie Hurst Impastato of Covington; a son, John Walter Hurst II of Hammond; a brother, Jules Hurst of Kentwood; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jules and Gladys Hurst of St. Helena Parish, and two brothers, Dee and Warren Hurst. Visitation and funeral services were held Saturday at the Chapel of the Light, Inspiration Park in Kentwood. Interment followed at Inspiration Park Memorial Garden. Military honors and 21-gun salute were planned. McKneely Funeral Home of Kentwood handled the arrangements.
