Mrs. Mary Jackson died at her home after a brief illness on Wednesday, April 12, 2006. A memorial service will be held Sunday, April 23 at 2 p.m. at the St. Helena Catholic Church. The family requests that donations be made to your favorite charity in honor of Mrs. Jackson. Mrs. Jackson, who opened the first kindergarten in Amite, has possibly started over a 1000 children on their road to a good education. In an interview during her reign as the 2003 Amite Oyster Pearl she proudly stated, I wanted to teach the children respect, obedience, manners and love along with their studies. She said she never had a child she could not handle and she never told a child or their parents they were bad, they were only naughty. Over the many years she gave a good foundation to the students as they continued their education. Several times students would return to her door, to thank her. Mrs. Jackson stated that her family has always been number one to her. She enjoyed raising her family, taking care of her husband and having the privilege of leading so many of Amite's children on the path to a good education. She was an active member of St. Helena Catholic Church. Eta as she was known to so many was honored by the town of Amite on her 90th birthday with a grand reception. She was presented the Key to the City by Mayor Reggie Goldsby and honored by many. In 2003, she represented the Town of Amite as the Amite Oyster Pearl.
