He served in the U.S. Merchant Marines, Navy and Coast Guard and was retired from Eastern Airlines. He was a life long member of the Triangle T Sportsman's League, National Rifle Association and American Legion post 47. He was a member of French Corner Baptist Church in Ponchatoula. Mr. James Dalton Johnson Jr., a resident of Ponchatoula, died Tuesday, July 11, 2006, at North Oaks Medical Center in Hammond. He was 82, born Thursday, Nov. 29, 1923, in Augusta, Ga., the son of the late James Dalton Sr. and Elsie Ford Johnson. After graduating from Tulane Law School, he practiced law in Bogalusa, Opelousas, New Orleans and Franklinton. Upon retirement, he became the chief clerk for Judge Grover Covington, the chief justice of the 21st Judicial District. He also taught at Tulane Law School in the 1960s and was the author of a number of law books dealing with property and notarial practice. Three weeks were long enough for her to be without "Charlie," her husband and soul mate. We know the angels in heaven brought them together again after he died Friday, June 4, 2010. She was born Oct. 20, 1935, in Little Rock, Ark., daughter of the late George and Grace McGuire Carlton. Jessie loved life and had an amazing gift of music. She played the piano by ear and sang with great joy. She loved entertaining and could keep everyone mesmerized for hours. She enjoyed working with her co-workers and her wonderful customers while employed at Walgreen's. She had a smile and a kind word for all who knew her. She was lovingly known as Nonnie to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren who loved her unconditionally. Jessie had a huge heart for animals of all kinds and never refused an opportunity to help a stray or rescue a potential pet. She will be greatly missed by her daughters, neighbors, extended family and friends but she will truly never be forgotten.
