Mr. Joiner was born on June 12, 1940, in Hammond to Eli and Thelma Joiner. Melvin came from a large, loving family where he was the baby of nine children. He loved to cook and barbecue, and he especially loved to boil shrimp. Mr. Joiner was passionate about bluegrass and Southern gospel music, and he played the upright bass. He was a well-liked and well-known man, and he never met a stranger. Melvin held his grandchildren dear to his heart and loved spending time with family and friends. He obtained a bachelor's degree in 1966 from Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond, a master's degree in 1968 from LSU, a Ph.D. in 1971 at Mississippi State University, then finished his higher education, post-doctorate, at Texas A&M between 1971 and 1973. Dr. Joiner was employed with General Electric Plastics headquarters in Pittsfield as manager of Global Toxicology Programs from May 1997 to April 2005. Dr. Joiner is survived by his wife, the former Michelle Bahan, whom he married Jan. 21, 1967, at St. Catherine of Siena Chapel in Metairie; three sons, Randall L. Joiner, Corey Joiner and Kyle Joiner. He is the father-in-law of Jennifer Joiner, and grandfather of Nathaniel Joiner and Grayson Joiner. Survived by wife, Barbara Fuhrmann Joiner, Loranger; two sons, Kirk Ray Joiner, Quincy, Mass., and Joseph Lee Joiner, Meridian; a daughter and son-in-law, Cindy J. and Robert Morel, Loranger; a daughter, Lesley Rae Joiner, Loranger; four grandchildren, Robert Morel Jr. and Justin Morel, both of Loranger, and Joshua Joiner and Landon Joiner, both of Meridian; two brothers, Donald Lee Joiner and Ronald Leslie Joiner Sr., both of Loranger; and four sisters, Ivearl J. Faust, Loranger, Zadie J. Efferson and Minnie J. DeWolf, both of Hammond, and Nobie J. Faust, Baton Rouge. Preceded in death by first wife, EvaLee Harper Joiner; two sisters, Pearl J. Faust and Viola J. Myers; a brother, T.J. Joiner; and parents, Joseph Monroe and Martha Ellen Bennett Joiner. He was a member of Livingston Lodge No. 160, F&AM, Hammond, a 32nd degree Mason and member of Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, S.J., USA. ************************************************************************* Obituary published in The Hammond Vindicator: 3/3/1950 JOINER, WILSON Wilson Joiner, 71, died Saturday at the family residence. He lived here for 41 years. He was the last member of the Joiner family on the paternal side and was widely acquainted throughout Tangipahoa parish, especially in the Loranger section which he left to come to Hammond. Funeral services were held Sunday. Interment was in the Oak Grove cemetery near Zemurra Lodge. He is survived by his wife, the former Lelia Williamson of Hammond; four sons, Virgil Joiner of Baton Rouge, Curtis Joiner of St. Louis, Mo., Homer Joiner of Hammond and Donald Joiner of Highland, Ill.; two daughters, Miss Eloise Joiner of Hammond and Mrs. Howard Raybon of Baton Rouge. Poole Funeral Home was in charge.
