Sherman Justus, long time resident of Amite, passed away Friday, April 9, 2010. He was 85 years old. He was born in Shreveport where he graduated from Fair Park High School. He is survived by his wife, and high school sweetheart, Hildred Beasley Justus; a son, Steven of Valencia, California and his wife Jackie; and two grandchildren, Erin and Scott both in California; niece, Lisa Justus of Dallas and nephews, Bobby Ray Justus of Wascom, Texas, Jay Justus of Tulsa, Clint Winter of Houston, and Richard Justus of Shreveport. Sherman was a proud veteran of WWII serving as a deck and gunnery officer in the Navy aboard the USS Oakland. The USS Oakland was moored adjacent to the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay on September 2, 1945. He was officer of the deck when the armistice was signed with Japan and witnessed the proceedings from his position. He remained in the Navy in the active Officer Reserves until 1957. After the war, Sherman resumed his studies at Louisiana Tech where he graduated in 1947 "cum laude" with a degree in Chemical Engineering. Both he and his wife are graduates of Tech. He was inducted into Tau Beta Pi, an honorary Chemical engineering fraternity. Sherman began his career with Gulf Oil Corporation in their Port Arthur refinery. In 1958 he moved to Houston to Eastern States Oil & Refining specializing in catalytic cracking and reformer operations. In 1961 he moved to Los Angeles in a merger of Eastern States with Signal Oil & Gas. He was to become Chief Process Engineer with Signal and was then promoted and transferred again to Houston as the Refinery Operations Manager. He retired in Houston as the Vice President of Refining for Charter Oil. Well known in the industry for his expertise in catalytic cracking and other refinery operations, he continued his work as a consultant for several years before fully retiring and moving to Amite in 1990. He and his wife were very active in the Methodist church as well as Kiwanis and other community activities. The family would like to thank the staff at St Helena Parish Nursing Home and Hospital for the loving care and support they gave to both Sherman and the family in the last 1.5 years of his life. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in his name could be made to Habitats for Humanity or St Judešs Childrenšs Research Hospital. Memorial Services will be held Thursday, April 15 at 1:30pm at the First United Methodist Church in Amite. McKneely Funeral Home, Amite, in charge of arrangements.
