Irene C. Karlton, A loving sister and daughter, a devoted wife and mother, an adoring grandmother and great grandmother, Irene C. Karlton left this life on Tuesday, September 18, 2012. She was born on February 25, 1922 in Natalbany, Louisiana. After graduation from high school, she moved to Hammond and met the love of her life, Frank Howard Karlton, whom she wed on November 14, 1942. Their family was completed by two children, Howard and Julia. After Frank's death, Irene became a house mother at SLU, where she made a positive impact on the lives of many young students. While there, she introduced her son to his future wife. At the age of 55, she returned to school, earned her LPN certification, and began a career in health care before retiring to Denham Springs. Irene was preceded in death by her husband; her parents, Elijah and Finess Chavers; and her siblings, Octavia Owens, Virginia DePriest, Guy Albin, Julius Chavers, Hollis Chavers, and Eugene Chavers. She is survived by her children, Howard Karlton (wife June), and Julia Ann Polk (husband Dwight); grandchildren, Becca Childress (husband Sonny), Irene ("Niki") Polk, Marjorie Torres (husband Ryan), Jonathan Polk, Megan Lofland (husband Jeremy); and great grandchildren, Madison and Morgan Childress, Aaron and Elliot Torres, and Aiden Lofland. Irene also leaves behind her beloved sisters: Imogene Argo, Beulah Andrews (husband Jim), and Doris Landry as well as many nephews, nieces, and other family members. Irene was a woman with many talents, great strength, a benevolent grace, and a playful wit. She lived a full and joyous life. Her legacy lives on in the memories of her family and friends and in the lives of all those she touched. Visitation will be held at Harry McKneely and Son Funeral Home in Hammond at 12 p.m. on Saturday, September 22, 2012 with religious services to follow at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Leo Miller and the Rev. David Landry officiating. Interment will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery. Irene's grandchildren will serve as pallbearers for their Maw-Maw. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to St. Joseph Hospice of Baton Rouge to support their mission of providing peace, comfort, and dignity to patients and their families. We would also like to thank Kathy Hamm of Personal Homecare Services for being a loving caregiver and friend.
