"COACH PAT" Died at his home in Hammond Tuesday morning, Dec. 12, 2000, while preparing breakfast. He was 78 and a native of Bogalusa. He was a 1947 graduate of Southeastern Louisiana University and earned a master's degree in education from the University of Wisconsin. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Amite and Livingston Masonic Lodge No. 160 in Hammond. At 6-foot-5, he was easy to look up to in more ways than one. After serving in the U.S. Army during World War II, he returned to Southeastern Louisiana University where he was captain of the undefeated 1946 football team, named Little All-American, and was later drafted by the Chicago Bears. He began his coaching career at Bogalusa High, then returned to Southeastern Louisiana University in 1949 and served as assistant football coach until he was named head coach in 1965. He also served as director of athletics at Southeastern Louisiana University from 1971 until his retirement in 1976. Some of his greatest successes came as head of the Southeastern baseball program from 1951 to 1964, leading the Lions to five conference championships and twice earning Coach of the Year honors. Since his retirement, Coach Pat continued his loyal support of his alma mater through active involvement in various university committees and the Southeastern Louisiana University Alumni Association. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Settoon Kenelly; a daughter, Sarah Kenelly Prevot; son-in-law, Troy Prevot; a son, Ken Kenelly; a daughter-in-law, Mary Kenelly; and five grand- daughters, Mary Hannah and Emily Prevot, Katherine, Caroline and Elizabeth Kenelly, all of Baton Rouge; stepdaughters, Kathryn S. Schaer and Jackie S. Hill; stepgranddaughters, Shelly and Kerri Hill, all of Springfield; sisters, Mary K. Ward, Baton Rouge, and Nell K. Ovre, Healdburg, Calif.; and brothers, John W. Kenelly Jr., Clemson, S.C., and Orville A. Kenelly, Colorado Springs, Colo. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Willis and Irma W. Kenelly of Bogalusa; and his first wife, Bert Armistead Kenelly of Hammond. Visitation at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home, 2000 N. Morrison, Blvd., Hammond, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, with a Masonic ceremony at 6:30 p.m. Religious services in the funeral home chapel at 11 a.m. Friday.
