He was a native of Pride, a former operator with the city of Ponchatoula and was a volunteer auxiliary policeman with the city of Ponchatoula. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Margaret Ellenberger Kirby of Ponchatoula; one son, Alvin "Junior" Kirby of Ponchatoula; two daughters, Mary Kirby Bowman and Shirley Kirby Effler, both of Ponchatoula; one brother, Thomas Nelson Kirby of Clinton; one sister, Mary Maraslis of Summit, Miss.; seven grandchildren and two great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Ruth Ann Kirby; his parents, Pleasant and Allie Roberts Kirby; two sisters, Alma Kirby Lambert and Lizzie Elizabeth Ballard; and one brother, Clarence Kirby. He was 78, a native of Osyka, Miss., and a resident of Greensburg. He worked as a machinist at Exxon for 10 years and worked at Gulfsouth in Ponchatoula for 17 years. Visitation at Amite Church of Christ, Amite, on Friday, May 2, from 9 a.m. until service at noon, conducted by Brother John Fulda. Interment in Greensburg Cemetery, Greensburg. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Myrtle Willis Kirby, of Greensburg; daughter, Carolyn Beth Kirby Blouin and husband Selwyn, of Gurley; daughter-in-law, Kathy Kirby; and four grandchildren, Katie Kirby, Zane Kirby, Lex Blouin and Beau and wife Andrea Merritt Blouin. He was preceded in death by his parents, John V. and Mamie Frazier Kirby; two brothers, Johnny Edward and Zelion Quinn; infant daughter, Madeline Gail Kirby; and son, Timothy Randall Kirby. She was born Dec. 8, 1902, in Amite. She received bachelor's and master's degrees from Northwestern State University, Natchitoches. She formerly taught school for many years in Baton Rouge. As a child, she was raised on a farm and rode to school on horseback. As an adult, she loved parties and traveled the world with her husband until both were well into their 80s; but she always had a deep affection for all things outdoors and for everyday people. Preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Austin Kirby Jr.; and a son, Thomas Austin Kirby III.
