[Date on death certificate is 1/28/1931] End Comes Peacefully - Prominent in Civic Work in Town and Parish The townspeople were visibly shocked last Wednesday evening when the sudden death of Hon. Joseph "George" Kopfler, at his residence became known. Mr. Kopfler had worked that day at his place of employment, the Gullett Gin Co. and at the end of the day had returned to his home apparently in good health. He did a few chores around the house after coming home then sat down with the family to supper. Shortly after eating he complained to his wife of not feeling very well and retired to the bedroom where he laid down to rest. His faithful helpmate of a lifetime administered a dose of medicine which had been prescribed for him for just such attacks but when she observed that his condition was growing worse she attempted to summon help but in just a short while he passed away. The end came quietly at 6:10 o'clock p. m. Mr. Kopfler was born in Amite, Louisiana on March, 23rd., 1862 and resided here all his life. He reared a large and very fine family of boys and girls, his wife being Mollie Werner, member of the distinguished family by that name. The happy union was blessed with the following children: Mrs. Jessie Bel, Mr(s). M.L. Robinson , Miss Alberta, Joseph, Marion and Freddie Kopfler, of Amite; Mrs. P. Lamphier of New Orleans, and Francis Kopfler of Cuba. In addition to these children he is survived by seven brothers and sisters besides nine grandchildren. His sisters are: Mrs. E. A. LeTard, Misses Louise and Katie Kopfler, of Amite and Mrs. Henry Forshag of New Orleans. The brothers are Willie Kopfler, of Hammond; Charles Kopfler, of Roseland and Eddie Kopfler, of Amite. Mr. Kopfler's life was just one continuous devotion to his employers and to his town and state, besides unselfishly serving his fellow men in any capacity upon which he was called. His fifty-five years of continuous employment was just a golden story of a man who served well and faithfully. At the end of a fiftieth year of service he received a signal recognition in the form of a Jubilee Presentation of a valuable token from his employers, the Gullett Gin Co. During these many years while serving in the capacity of shop foreman he had occasion to encounter many different kinds of men. Every souls under his authority has naught but good words for him. He was always so patient and so considerate as to win the love, esteem and admiration of all men with whom he ever came in contact. He served Amite as its Mayor for a number of terms and won the full approbation of the citizenry retiring voluntarily when he deemed it a duty to give others an opportunity to serve. At the time of his death he was president of the Tangipahoa Parish Police Jury and did commendable work while serving in that capacity. Mr. Kopfler while given high recognition in fraternal circles here was a member of the St. Helena Catholic Church of Amite. The body was interred in the Amite Cemetery today. It was followed to its last resting place by a very large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends. A pall of gloom hung heavily over Amite and vicinity from the time of the announcement of his death for he was loved and revered by all and many genuine and sincere regrets at his passing were expressed by persons in all walks of life for a true friend had passed whose place will be hard to fill. The loved ones can take consolation in the fact that the Master with whom the secret of life and death still remains intact called him to a greater reward for a greater purpose after his many year's labor to that everlasting peace, rest and tranquility which he was so richly earned.
