The Reverend Richard B. Kozelka, Hammond, died on Sunday, September 6, 2009, at 4:33 PM. He was 83. Cause of death was a brain tumor complicated by Parkinson's. Kozelka was retired Principal Minister of First Congregational Church of Minnesota in Minneapolis, which he served from 1974 to 1991, the longest pastorate in the church's history. He had previously served churches in Cannon Falls, Minnesota; Sparta, Wisconsin; Denver, Colorado and Montclair, New Jersey. He was graduated from Yale University Divinity School and ordained a minister of the United Church of Christ in 1951. The son of the late Dean/Professor-Emeritus Richard L. Kozelka of the University of Minnesota and Winifred Bradley Kozelka, both of whom died in 1985, Kozelka received the BA and MA degrees from that university in 1946 and 1953. He is survived by his twin brother Robert of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, by four children: Sara B. Caraszi and Amy Gail Kozelka of Connecticut, Richard E. Kozelka of Maryland and Barbara P. Kozelka of Colorado, by two grandchildren, Eric Caraszi of San Francisco and Anna Caraszi of Portland, Maine, and by his wife Katherine Kolb, Professor of French and German at Southeastern Louisiana University, with whom he moved to Hammond in 1999. A memorial service will be held on Friday, September 18 at 4PM in the Reimer's Auditorium on Cherry St. in downtown Hammond.
