She was 65. Visitation at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home, Hammond, from 9 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Saturday. Religious services at Holy Ghost Catholic Church, Hammond, at 11 a.m. Saturday. Interment in Holly Gardens Cemetery. Survived by a sister, Anna Lacara Mancuso, Hammond; two brothers, Angelo Lacara and Joe Lacara, both of Hammond; and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by her parents, Sam and Mary Notariano Lacara. *************************************************************************** Obituary published in The Advocate (Baton Rouge): 12/19/2007 LACARA, PHILOMENE CHEHARDY Philomene Chehardy Lacara, 72, passed away Sunday, Dec. 16, 2007, at North Oaks Medical Center. A lifelong resident of Hammond and Amite, she was born October 25, 1935, to George and Virginia Chehardy, both deceased. As a lover of learning and education, she achieved her undergraduate degree and later master's degree, from Southeastern Louisiana University in the study of the English language. She graduated with honors and was a proud member of the 13 Club which recognizes academic excellence. While raising her family, Philomene was a teacher throughout her professional career with service to the Holy Ghost Catholic School, Ponchatoula High School, Hammond High School, Hammond State School and the Southeast Louisiana Hospital educational program. In 1958, Philomene married Angelo Lacara Sr. Together they raised four children and later became the proud grandparents of six grandchildren. In addition to her loving husband, she is survived by her oldest son Angelo Jr., his wife Sue, and their children, Marcus and Alison; daughter, Ginger Lacara and her daughter, Emily; daughter, Diana Benner and her husband, Rob, and their daughters, Haley and Emma; and youngest son, George, his wife, Ashley and their daughter, Taylor. Philomene was very committed and close to her siblings throughout her life. She was preceded in death, by her older brother, John Chehardy. She is survived by her younger sister, George Ann Smith, and younger brother, Peter Michael Chehardy, both of Amite. Numerous nieces and nephews can remember fond times, especially at the holidays, with Aunt Phil. Phil enjoyed a good travel adventure and always looked forward to vacations in the Smokey Mountains that she and Angelo took to Maggie Valley. After retirement, she shared her time between her grandchildren and her hobbies. As a devout Catholic, Philomene was a member of Holy Ghost Catholic Church. Her devotion to prayer and the rosary was well known within her family. The family would like to thank the numerous friends and prayer groups who faithfully walked with her during her moments of joy, pain and challenges. She was truly appreciative of all your emotional and spiritual support. She was also committed to helping the community. During her tenure at the Hammond State School, she found a special love for all the staff and students. One of her favorite volunteer activities was the annual Christmas party sponsored by her beloved Lioness Club. She also enjoyed her volunteer experiences with Special Olympics and various cancer organizations.
