Sister Gertrude Lamendola, O.S.B., passed away Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004. She was born March 9, 1917, to Angela Ruli and Sam Lamendola, the youngest of four children. Sister Gertrude grew up in Baton Rouge. She entered St. Gertrude's Monastery in Covington, made her first vows there Feb. 15, 1934, and perpetual vows on March 6, 1938. This first phase, the longest of her consecrated life, was spent teaching kindergarten and early primary grades. Students kept in touch with her during her lifetime -- a testament to her effect on their lives. The second phase of her consecrated life began in 1991, when she transferred to Our Lady Queen Monastery and made solemn vows as a Benedictine Nun on Aug. 22, 1992. She was so happy to devote herself to the contemplative life and the simple life of the Benedictine Community. Her quiet joy, gentleness and thoughtfulness enriched the sisters' lives and all who came to know her there. The third phase of her consecrated life was spent in giving all through suffering with Alzheimer's disease and needing 24-hour care. When you visited her during this period, you left lifted by her gracious welcome. Her life was a celebration of love, and we are very grateful that we shared in its warmth. We will miss her deeply, but rejoice that she has finished her course. Visitation at Our Lady Queen Monastery, Tickfaw, from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 6. Religious service at the monastery at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 7. Interment in Our Lady Queen Monastery Cemetery. She is survived by her sister, Rosalie Gagnard, Batchelor. She was preceded in death by her parents, Sam and Angela Ruli Lamendola; and two brothers, Vincent and the Rev. Francis Lamendola. Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home, Hammond, is in charge of arrangements. ***************************************************************************
