A resident of New Roads, she died at 9:42 a.m. Monday, April 2, 2001, at Pointe Coupee General Hospital, New Roads. She was 72 and a native of Kentwood. Visiting at St. Mary's Catholic Church, New Roads, from 1:30 p.m. until religious services at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, conducted by the Rev. Michael Schatzle. Interment in False River Memorial Park. Survived by her husband, Joe Laurent, New Roads; four daughters, Lynda "Sam" McVea, Grace "Dusty" Bordelon, Jeanine Mooney and Michele "Shelly" Henry; two sons, Randy and Joey Laurent Jr.; a sister, Jimmy Ruth Speryrer; a brother, Paul Knight; 14 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Timothy Henry, Johnny Bordelon, Gary Mooney, Brett LeBlanc, Jimmy Laurent Jr. and Jimmy Speryrer. "TIGER" A veteran of World War II, an Iwo Jima survivor, he was born Feb. 8, 1923, in Plaquemine, and died at the Southeast Louisiana War Veterans Home, Reserve, on Tuesday, March 8, 2011. He graduated from Plaquemine High School and entered the U.S. Navy in 1943. He completed boot camp in California; at Hospital Corp. School in San Diego, Shoemaker Hospital; San Luis Obispo for amphibious training; departed as a corpsman aboard USS Pickens, APA 190, upon her commission in Astoria, Ore., where the ship met up with the convoy and units of the 25th Regimented Marine 4th Division, then to Iwo Jima and action with Beach Party for 10 days. He witnessed the American flag raising on Mount Suribachi, then made-up with a task force that faked landing at Okinawa on April Fool's Day. He was honorably discharged Dec. 10, 1945, and was awarded the American Theatre Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Medal with 2-stars, Occupation Medal and Victory Medal. Murphy was a man with many nicknames. He was called "Preacher" at Plaquemine High, "Frenchy" during World War II, then "Tiger" or "Mr." Murphy. A resident of Port Allen since 1945, he operated Murphy's Esso Station, Saia's Place, then worked and retired from several companies associated with the New Orleans Steamship Association at Port Allen Port. Murphy was a longtime member and supporter of the LSU Traveling Tigers. He loved all the sports and was an avid fan of baseball, especially the Boston Red Sox. He was so elated at their finally winning the World Series during his lifetime. He was elected several times to the West Baton Rouge Parish Democratic Executive Committee and also served as chairman until his illness, at which time he resigned after 27 years of service. He attended the Manresa Retreats and was so proud to be a Manresa Retreatment. He is a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3785 and a lifetime member of the Catholic High Men's Club. For decades, Murphy Laurent was active in the Knights of Columbus Council 2875, Port Allen. Visiting will be at Holy Family Catholic Church, Port Allen, on Saturday, March 12, from 9 a.m. until Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m., celebrated by the Rev. David Allen. A rosary will be recited at the church at 9:30 a.m. Saturday. Interment in Roselawn Memorial Park, Baton Rouge. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Jeanette Saia Laurent, Port Allen; a devoted daughter and son-in-law, Pam and Roland DeLaune, of Georgetown, Texas; two caring grandsons, Brant Roland, his wife, Beverly Aloisio DeLaune, and their children, Aaron Michael and Anna DeLaune, of LaPlace, and Drew Michael, his wife, Denise Spiers DeLaune, and their children, Grace Emily and Matthew Tyler DeLaune, of Luling; brothers, Richard Laurent and John Laurent, both of Baton Rouge; and a sister, Alice Laurent Davis, of Hammond. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Alice Thibodeaux Laurent; a brother, Harold Laurent; an infant sister, Mary Alice; and sisters, Beatrice Lassard and Vera Haydel. He was also preceded in death by his in-laws who always treated him as their son, Jack and Mary Lamartina Saia, who were of Port Allen. Pallbearers will be his two grandsons, Brant and Drew DeLaune; his godchild, Joe Saia Jr.; nephew, Lee Laurent, Gaithen Fertitta and Ret. Col. Nolen Adams. Honorary pallbearers are Mark Graffeo, Mike Cazes and Esquire Tom Acosta.
