Alvin LeBlanc Jr., age 78, a native of Metairie and a resident of Hammond for 50 years, he died Sunday, July 28, 2002, at North Oaks Medical Center, Hammond. He was a beloved and devoted husband, father and grandfather. He graduated from Metairie High School and earned an undergraduate degree from Southeastern Louisiana College and a graduate degree from LSU. He served as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. He had a long career at Southeastern Louisiana University spanning more than 50 years, having served as dean of men and track coach and he also held the position of vice president of administrative affairs. He officially retired in 1985, but still worked at SLU in a part-time capacity when needed as interim athletic director and as director of compliance for NCAA regulations. He was given the title of professor emeritus and vice president emeritus in 1986. He was named to the SLU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1991, and was named by Special Olympics Louisiana to their Hall of Fame in 1998. He was a member of the United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Joyce Sibley LeBlanc of Hammond; a son and daughter- in-law, David Charles LeBlanc and Wanda East LeBlanc of Pine Grove; a son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Brian Dawson LeBlanc and Patrenia Hartl LeBlanc of Abita Springs; a daughter and son-in-law, Sandra LeBlanc Gilbreath and Dr. William C. Gilbreath of Hammond; 10 grandchildren and a great-grandchild; and a brother, Charles Joseph LeBlanc of Metairie. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin LeBlanc Sr. and Blazine Siefker LeBlanc; and a brother, David E. LeBlanc.
