She was born on Saturday, November 30, 1940, in Hammond, La., daughter of the late Jack Newton and the late Vivian Caruthers Newton. Maya founded the Hammond Cultural Foundation and was responsible for turning the Levy Building into an art center. She was a prolific artist, published author, playwright, actor, director and teacher. She was a Fullbright awardee. Her art is on display in North Oaks Medical Center, as well as many homes and businesses throughout our community. There is an endowed scholarship for Theatre and art at Southeastern Louisiana University in her name. Maya loved her children, grand-children, art, theater and playing bridge. She also loved flowers, especially orchids, which she was adept at growing. Surviving are son & daughter-in-law, James and Jacqueline Griffith, son & daughter-in- law, Christian and Natalie Griffith, daughter & son-in-law, Bridgette and Mack Wilson, brother & sister-in-law, Autley and Cathy Newton, sister and brother-in-law, Sue Jane and Tom Garret, grandchildren, Dakota Griffith, Emma Griffith, Alec Griffith, Annabelle Wilson and Brynn Lula Griffith.
