The daughter of Arthur Josiah Green and Vivian Bateman, she committed her energy to serving others in her church and community from an early age. Marie completed her bachelor's degree in home economics at LSU. She married Truett Carr Lewis on May 25, 1946. She worked for the Cooperative Extension Service for her first job and later taught home economics at Chesbrough High School for 18 years until her retirement. An energetic sponsor of the Future Homemakers of America, Marie accompanied students on many national FHA convention trips. After her husband's death in 1982, Marie managed the family dairy farm and assumed her husband's duties as editor of the Gulf Dairy Newsletter. In 1986, the Kentwood Ledger named Marie Lewis as Mother of the Year. In 1988, she was named the grand marshal of the Kentwood Dairy Day Parade. Marie also helped bring about the establishment of the Second Ward Water District, a dream imagined by her husband. Until her recent illness, she served as an employee of the Tangipahoa Water District, taking care of all customers on the north end of the parish. Mrs. Lewis was an active member of Mount Hermon Baptist Church in Kentwood, where she served as a Sunday school teacher, a leader for the Acteens, Women's Missionary Union and strong supporter of missions. Her motto was JOY: Jesus first, Others second, Yourself last. Recently Marie served on the Historian committee for Delta Kappa Gamma, an honor society of women educators, and helped prepare a scrapbook for the Omicron Chapter, where she was an active member and past president. She had both a card ministry and bread ministry where she would remember birthdays, anniversaries and special occasions by sending cards and/or baking bread for friends, family, repairmen and even folks who just dropped in unexpectedly. She was an excellent seamstress and made clothes for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. For years she decorated her mailbox to match the seasons, holidays or arrival of out-of-town family members. An avid LSU fan, Marie cheered for the LSU Tigers in all sports, wearing purple and gold on game days and listening on radio if she could not watch on TV. Her philosophy of life was: "Happiness adds and multiplies as we divide it with others." Mrs. Lewis is survived by her brother, Frank Green and his wife, Pat, of Enon; three daughters, Phyllis Simpson, of St. Gabriel, Trudy Hanson and her husband, Mike, of Amarillo, Texas, and Kay Simpson and her husband, Alan Simpson, of Amite; 10 grandchildren, Jessica Christy, Walter Simpson, Stephanie Simpson, Ellen Burford, Leah Hanson, Chad Hanson, Ashley Cook, Tori Hanson, Brad Simpson and Brian Simpson; and eight great-grandchildren, Anna, Kegan and Garrett Cook, Zach, Ben and Jake Hanson, Ryan Alexander and Zeke Burford. On Wednesday, March 30, 2005, Trudy Delphine Lewis departed this earth to her mansion in heaven. She was 45, born May 9, 1959, to Hughey and Earline Jackson in Hattiesburg, Miss. She graduated from Hattiesburg High School in 1977, and attended Jackson State University and the University of Southern Mississippi. She was an employee of the University of Southern Mississippi for 17 years. Trudy's faith in God began when she became a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church.
