The death of his body, after suffering numerous strokes, occurred at the nursing home, where he had lived for the past several years. He was born in Natalbany in 1913, and this past spring, with his family surrounding him, celebrated his 90th birthday! Neither he nor his brother had been given middle names. To remedy that, following the World War I death of their father in France, the young boys each took one of his names: Alton becoming Alton William and Milton becoming Milton Frank. Since there was no nearby high school where his family then lived, he was sent to Copiah-Lincoln, a boarding school, from which he graduated. He subsequently graduated from Copiah Junior College and then continued his studies at LSU. There he became a lifelong purple and gold Tiger fan! When his sons were young, to spend more time with them he became very involved in the Boy Scout program. He was named institutional representative for Baton Rouge area scouting and worked with Troop 31. He became a Christian as a direct result of the prayers of his wife and her exemplary Christian life. Once born again, he held a very strong Christian commitment, always an active member of a local church wherever the family lived. Among the things he left behind were copies of tracts, which for many years he passed out to employees, clients and others, and his well- worn and very "marked up" Bible. Survived by his sons and daughters-in- law, Terry andMerrell Long and Ted and Margie Long; daughter and son-in- law, Regina and Paul Stewart; sister, Vivian Brown Felder; sister-in-law, Betty Long; and numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grand- children. He was preceded in death by his wife, Clyde Hendry Long; father, William Frank Long; mother and stepfather, Lillie Mae Kennison Long Brown and Jack Brown; a son, William Frank "Billy" Long; a daughter, Nelda Long; a brother, Milton Long; a brother-in-law, Aubry Felder; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Clayton and Hughla R. Hendry and Malone and Virginia H. Hendry; a grandson, David Markus Long; and two great-grandchildren, Will Elliott Long and Joy Long. Visitation was at Seale Funeral Home, Denham Springs, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday. Visitation at the funeral home from noon until service at 2 p.m. Tuesday, officiated by his son, the Rev. Ted Long. A graveside service at the Denham Springs Cemetery will follow. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the Alton Long Scholarship Fund or the Nelda Long Scholarship Fund, 900 Walker St., N.E., P.O. Box 3330, Cleveland, TN 37311. The donations are tax deductible. The family wishes to express their gratitude to the Harvest Manor Nursing Home staff for the very special care provided for their loved one during his stay at the home. ************************************************************************* Obituary published in The Advocate (Baton Rouge) on: 11/14/2008 LONG, B.
