Sister Mary Hildegarde was born Italia Luca in Marblehead, Wis., daughter of the late Anthony Luca and Maria Busa Luca; sister of the late Mary Luca and Anthony Luca; and aunt of the late Tommy Luca of Galesburg, Ill. Sister is survived by one sister, Madelene L. Nagel of Milwaukee; a nephew, Fred Nagel of Hot Springs, Ark.; a niece, Sharann Nagel of Milwaukee; and several grandnieces. After professing her vows as a Dominican Sister, she taught at St. John the Baptist and St. Anthony of Padua in New Orleans, and St. Peter School in Reserve. Sister earned a bachelor's degree in music education and a master's degree in administration from LSU and certification in counseling from St. Louis University. Sister Mary Hildegarde was assigned to St. Mary's Dominican High School as band director in 1944, and also served as registrar, guidance counselor, assistant principal, principal from 1968 to 1973, treasurer for 10 years and was currently advancement assistant. Since 1973, Sister Mary Hildegarde was administrative assistant for the Archdiocesan Band Program. In May 2001, the Sister Mary Hildegarde Luca, O.P., Music Room was dedicated in Alumnae Hall at St. Mary's Dominican High School. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 4, at St. Clement of Rome Church, 4317 Richland Ave. (intersection of Cleary and West Esplanade), Metairie, followed by interment in the Dominican Sisters Cemetery in Rosaryville, Ponchatoula. A prayer service was held on Tuesday, Aug. 3, at 4:45 p.m. in the Dominican Sisters Motherhouse Chapel, 580 Broadway, New Orleans. Visitation was on Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Motherhouse. Visiting at the church on Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. until Mass.
