Please sign the guestbook at www.NAJamesFH.com. *************************************************************************** Obituary published in The Advocate (Baton Rouge) on: 9/11/2006 MADDOX, FAY PROVOST Fay Provost Maddox, 77, having suffered from a cerebral stroke and its complications, passed away on Friday, Sept. 8, 2006, the Feast of the Nativity of Mary. A native of Lafayette, she was born Unifred Marie Provost on Sept. 27, 1928, to Cyrus Martin Provost and Sadie Blanchet Provost. Throughout her life, family and friends knew her as "Fay", a name she was affectionately given while attending Mount Carmel Elementary on Convent Street in Lafayette. In the 1940s, she completed undergraduate and graduate studies in education at Southwestern Louisiana Institute, now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, and Columbia University in New York. Later, she pursued studies in French at Southeastern Louisiana University. Following a brief career in teaching, she married Ulysses Joseph Guillory, owner and chief executive of Community Motors in Hammond. They lived in Pleasant Ridge and later Hammond, beginning in the 1950s. They were married for 19 years until the death of Mr. Guillory in 1968. In 1972, she married Thomas Kier Maddox, professor of mathematics at Southeastern Louisiana University, continuing to reside in Hammond. Mrs. Maddox always remained active in the life of her community and the Catholic Church. She served as a member of the Diocesan School Board for the Diocese of Baton Rouge in the 1960s, was a volunteer in the St. Vincent de Paul Society, taught catechism to children, was an early supporter for the establishment of St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Tangipahoa Parish, and initiated Friday Eucharistic devotion at St. Albert's Chapel in Hammond. Through the years she supported Catholic causes, was particularly fond of the Divine Mercy Novena, and remained a devoted daughter of the Church. She was an avid bridge player. For decades her bridge club and supper club included some of her closest and dearest friends. She enjoyed reading, gardening and cooking, and traveled extensively in Europe and the Americas. Her dedication to her family was tireless and without reservation. Mrs. Maddox is survived by her husband of 34 years, Thomas Maddox of Hammond; a daughter, Annette Marie Guillory Stair of New Orleans and her husband, Craig Stair; a son, Mathieu Charles Guillory of Quito in Ecuador and his wife Amparo Piedad Rodriguez Lara de Guillory; her brothers, Cyrus Jude Provost of Morgan City and his wife Christine Guarisco Provost and the Rev. Monsignor Glen John Provost of Lafayette; her grandchildren, David Ryan Hatfield, Carolyn Marie Hatfield, Juan-Carlos Guillory, Bernadette Marie Guillory and Sean Michael Stair; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. A Solemn Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Mrs. Maddox on Wednesday, Sept. 13, at 10 a.m. in the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in Lafayette. The music, under the direction of Mr. Thomas Niel, will include movements from the Gregorian Requiem Mass and the Requiem of Gabriel FaurŽ, as well as Mr. Niel's arrangement of "J'irai la voir un jour", with Mrs. Melody Thibodeaux as soprano soloist and Mrs. Lauren Baker as violin soloist. John Martin Provost, David Ryan Hatfield, Sean Michael Stair, Michael Maddox, Steven Maddox and Kevin Christopher Hebert will serve as pallbearers. Burial will take place at the Provost Family plot in the Lafayette Cathedral Cemetery. The wake is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 12, at McKneely and Sons Funeral Home in Hammond, beginning at 4 p.m., with the recitation of the rosary at 7 p.m. and concluding at 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, a memorial gift may be made to the Cathedral Maintenance Trust of the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, P.O. She is survived by her husband, Jim Maddox of Clio; three sons, Ray, Valmond and Jack Sibley, all of Clio; four stepsons, Chris Dedon of Denham Springs, Randy Dedon of Tickfaw, Dale Dedon of Springfield and Randy Maddox of Springfield; three stepdaughters, Vicki Spicer, Sherry Stewart and Jackie Maddox, all of Idaho; one sister, Thelma Brignac of Clio; one brother, Lloyd Meissner of Ponchatoula; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Guy Sibley; her second husband, Buck Dedon; one son, Guy Sibley; and her parents, Fred Oscar and Rose Olive Glover Meissner. The Rev. He was 90, born in Weatherford, Okla., on Thursday, July 19, 1917, son of the late Agustus Carlyle Maddox and Tommie McBride Maddox. Mr. Maddox was a retired mathematics professor with Southeastern Louisiana University, Hammond. He was a lieutenant commander (DE) in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Survivors include a daughter, Annette Guillory Stair, of New Orleans; son and daughter-in-law, Mathieu Charles and Amparo Piedad Rodriguez Lara de Guillory, of Quito, Ecuador; five grandchildren, David Hatfield, Carolyn Hatfield, Sean Stair, Juan Carlos Guillory and Bernadette Marie Guillory; sister-in-law, Clair Maddox; nephews and their spouses, Michael and Mary Camille Maddox, Steven and Faith Maddox and Timothy and Diane Maddox.
