Carolyn graduated from Hammond High School and was an alumnus of Southeastern Louisiana University. Before retirement, she helped many people for over 30 years as a case worker for the Louisiana Dept. of Health and Human Resources. For the past eleven years, she has worked in the After Care program at St. PeterÕs Catholic School in Covington. She often spoke of the wonderful children she encountered daily. Carolyn was an avid reader and a champion at crossword puzzles. She was an excellent cook and loved to cook with her sisters and friends. ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Charles D. Magee, 66, a Ponchatoula native and 1955 graduate of Ponchatoula High School, died in June in Albuquerque. Arrangements by N.A James Funeral Home. ************************************************************************* Obituary published in The Advocate (Baton Rouge) on: 10/2/2002 MAGEE, GRETCHEN Gretchen Caroline Ott Magee, age 88, of the Ponchatoula and Hammond area, died peacefully on Thursday, Sept. 26, 2002, at The Gorham House in Gorham, Maine, where she had resided since 1992. She was born in Franklinton on Feb. 1, 1914, the eldest daughter of Magee Walter Ott and Elizabeth Shaw Ott. She attended Franklinton schools and LSU. She graduated in 1938 with a master's degree in music. Gretchen was a well- loved teacher of piano and music theory at Southeastern Louisiana University from 1940 until her retirement in 1976. Her teachings have inspired literally hundreds of fine musicians, including jazz musician great, Bill Evans, who counted Gretchen as one of his most influential composition teachers when he was a student at Southeastern in the 1950s. A highlight of Gretchen's professional career was her study in 1967 with Nadia Boulanger, a prestigious teacher and composer in Fontainebleau, France. Gretchen herself was a well-known pianist at recitals and music club performances she gave in the Hammond/Ponchatoula area, where she lived for over 50 years. She was inducted into the Southeastern Louisiana University Music Hall of Fame in 1994 and was said to have taught practically every other inductee at that time. In addition to her talents in music, she was a gifted homemaker, gardener and dancer. She was an avid member of the Sierra Club and was devoted to environmental concerns. She was predeceased by her sisters, Florence Ott Michael and Elizabeth Ott Watts; a brother, Thomas deVecmon Ott; and former husband, Doyle Conan Magee. She is survived by a daughter, Caroline Kendrick Magee Loupe of New Gloucester, Maine; a grand-daughter, Kerry Lynn Loupe of Santa Fe, N.M.; and a number of nieces and nephews.
