John D. Mallers, 73 years of age, of Kentwood, died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2001, after a short illness. Mr. Mallers, a retired timber industry expert and dairy farmer, leaves three daughters, Elizabeth Bowman of Pleasant Hills, Pa., Valerie Mallers of Weston, Mass., and Linda Welch of Plymouth, Mass.; and two sons, John C. Mallers of Easton, Mass., and Bradford A. Mallers of Kentwood. Mr. Mallers, born in Chicago, was the great-grandson of Mrs. David B. Joyce of the Joyce Louisiana timber legacy, the family business that eventually drew him to settle there. A graduate of Chicago's Boys' Latin School and Duke University, Mr. Mallers was a student of science fiction, an ardent sports enthusiast and an early fan of NASCAR who visited many of the racing circuit's tracks around the country. Mr. Mallers was especially close to his five grandchildren, Brandon Welch, John C. Mallers Jr., Sarah Welch, Julie Mallers and Jared Mallers. He was preceded in death by two additional beloved grandchildren, Jennifer Barkhouse and Roger Mallers. Memorial services for the man known affectionately as "Mr. John" will be held Monday at 5 p.m. at McKneely Funeral Home, Kentwood, and aboard the charter fishing craft "My Way" Wednesday on the Gulf of Mexico, south of his adopted home of New Orleans. ***************************************************************************
