She died peacefully at her home. She was born on August 28, 1947, in the U.S. Army Hospital, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, the only daughter of Major (Ret.) Howard D. Smith, Sr. and DaMarys Ray Smith. She graduated from Stedman High School in Stedman, North Carolina, Pine Hall Academy in Clinton, North Carolina, and attended Pembrook State University in Pembrook, North Carolina. DeNise was preceded in death by her first husband, Major Alfred S. Gallinaro; her parents, Major (Ret.) Howard D. Smith, Sr. and DeMarys Ray Smith; and brother, Howard D. Smith, Jr. She is survived by her husband, LTC (Ret.) Paul M. Marek, Hammond, Louisiana; son and daughter- in-law, Joseph H. and Meghan M. Gallinaro; granddaughters, Jillian Marie and Barbara Claire, Baton Rouge; son and daughter-in-law, Jonathan M., Sr. and Caroline M. Gallinaro; grandsons, Jonathan M., Jr. and Crosby J. Gallinaro, Atlanta; brother and sister-in-law, LTC (Ret.) Tally E. and Roni R. Smith, Kathleen, Georgia; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Thomas A. and Sandra S. Marek, Du Quoin, Illinois; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Howard and Rose Marler, Lake Havasu, Arizona; aunt, Janie W. Ray, Florence, South Carolina; three nephews, four nieces, four great nieces, and one great nephew. DeNise was active in the Army Wives Club of Fort Bragg, North Carolina, Fort McClellan, Alabama, and the Mannhiem Military Community, Mannheim West Germany. She was also an active volunteer for the American Red Cross. Viewing will be at St. Albert the Great Catholic Church in Hammond, Thursday, May 30, from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. The funeral Mass will be said at St. Albert Catholic Church at 10:00 a.m., Friday, May 31, 2013. Burial will be in the Lafayette Memorial Park, Fayetteville, North Carolina, Monday, June 3, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. The family extends its sincere appreciation to the chaplain, nurses and social worker from North Oaks Hospice, and to Reverend Randy M.
