He was 87 and a native of Hammond. He owned several businesses over the years, with locations from Ponchatoula to Amite, culminating in the restaurant that bore the family name near Oak Knoll Country Club. He developed Gateway Shopping Center in Ponchatoula, used his experience as a pilot to sell airplanes in Hammond, and at one point had a B.F. Goodrich dealership with stores in Ponchatoula, Hammond, Amite, Kentwood and McComb, Miss. His wife founded the original Pugh's Florist in Hammond. He was a member for 66 years and former president of Hammond Rotary Club, a Paul Harris Fellow and a member and former president of John F. Kennedy Knights of Columbus in Hammond. He served on the board of directors of First Guaranty Bank, served on the finance committee for the Archdiocese of Baton Rouge and served for 15 years as treasurer of the Louisiana Motor Transport Association. He co-founded the Hammond Little League and the Southeastern Louisiana University Development Foundation. He and his wife attended Southeastern Louisiana University and last year were honored (she posthumously) in a testimonial concert on the SLU campus put together by their children as the first in an annual series of tributes to those who have made major contributions to the business community in the Florida Parishes. He married his college sweetheart, Sadie Pugh, who preceded him in death. Survivors include seven sons, John of Largo, Fla., Pat of Bay St. Louis, Miss., Mike of Covington, Donald of Hammond, Timothy of McComb, Ill., William of Travelers Rest, S.C., and Richard of Metairie; two daughters, Helen Penton of Defiance, Mo., and Rita Mashburn of Hammond; 15 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Visitation at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home, Hammond, from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday. Family and friends are invited to attend Mass of Christian Burial at St. Joseph Abbey, Covington, at 1 p.m. Wednesday.
