A native of Houston, he earned a bachelor of arts degree at Southeastern Louisiana University in 1954 and a JD at Tulane University in 1957. He practiced law in Hammond from 1957 to 1999, often describing himself as a simple country lawyer. His extensive civic work included the Boy Scouts of America, Tangipahoa Parish Mental Health Association, Louisiana Mental Health Association, Louisiana Moral and Civic Foundation, Common Cause, Gideons International, Kiwanis, Judicial Council of the United Methodist Church, Rotary International, Hammond Chamber of Commerce, Southeastern Louisiana University Alumni Association, Tulane School of Law Alumni Association, Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite and Order of DeMolay. His professional activities included membership in the American Bar Association, Louisiana Bar Association and the 21st District Bar Association, American Judicature Society and American Association of Trial Lawyers, among others. His honors and awards included honorary society memberships: Phi Delta Phi and Phi Alpha Delta, honorary degrees from Centenary College, DePauw University, Oklahoma City University and Southeastern Louisiana University, Hammond Kiwanis Man of the Year, 1961, Layman of the Year Award of the Louisiana Annual Conference United Methodist Church, 1966 and 1973, Distinguished Alumnus Award Southeastern Louisiana University, 1981, 33rd degree Mason, Legion of Honor and Order of DeMolay, among others. The Matheny Lectureship in the Humanities at Southeastern Louisiana University and the Tom Matheny Scholarship established by the United Methodist Foundation of Christian Higher Education at Centenary College and Dillard University recognized his interest in and commitment to higher education. Survivors include his mother, Lorene Matheny, Hammond; a sister, Joe Alice Barrett, Norwich, Ohio; a brother, John Matheny, Hammond; two nephews, three nieces, a great-nephew and three great-nieces. His father, Whitman Matheny, preceded him in death. Visitation at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home, Hammond, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday. Religious services at First United Methodist Church, Hammond, at 10 a.m. Saturday, conducted by the Rev. Charles Humphries of Shreveport. Interment in Rose Memorial Cemetery.
