He was 63 and a native of Detroit. He was a retired U.S. Navy chief petty officer, having served during the Vietnam War, and later worked for Avondale Industries. Visitation at McKneely Funeral Home, Amite, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday. Visitation resumes at Kedron Baptist Church, Amite, from 9 a.m. until religious service at 11 a.m. Thursday, conducted by the Rev. Herb Cowan. Interment in Kedron Cemetery, Amite. Survived by his wife, Mona Jean Nunnery McCandlish, Kentwood; son, Robert Gerald Carter II, Kentwood; daughter, Melinda Eve Delancey, Kentwood; sister, Nancy Lee McCandlish, Florida; nine grandchildren, Cecelia Lyn Carter, William Delancey, Krystyn Green, Rebecca Richard, Christopher Strickland, Jeremy Strickland, Jeffrey Brownlow, Jacob Provstgaard and Mark Brownlow; and numerous great-grand- children. Preceded in death by two daughters, Crystal Dawn Anthony and Jerri Lynne Carter; and parents, William and Irma McCandlish.
