JESSE HARRELL A retired optometrist and local civic leader, he peacefully departed this life on Friday, Aug. 18, 2006, at his home in Amite at the age of 82. Born April 22, 1924, Dr. McClendon was a graduate of Amite High School and obtained his bachelor of science degree in 1946 from Southeastern Louisiana University. Thereafter, he received his doctorate of optometry and bachelor of science in visual optics in 1948 in Chicago. Dr. McClendon was a member of Masonic Lodge 175 F&AM, served on the state Central Democratic Committee for more than 50 years, served as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Chicago and was a Louisiana state racing commissioner under Gov. John McKeithen's administration. Dr. McClendon was an organizer and past president of the Florida Parishes Skeet and Gun Association, a member of the National Rifle Association and a longtime member of the Amite Rotary, having achieved Paul Harris Fellow status. He was also a lifetime member of the American Forestry Association and was appointed to serve on the Soil, Water and Conservation Board, as well as the Drainage Board and the Zachary Taylor Parkway Commission. Dr. McClendon enjoyed competitive skeet shooting, wing shooting and was an avid outdoorsman, conservationist and tree farmer. He was a member of the First Southern Methodist Church, the Amite Chamber of Commerce and Sigma Chi Fraternity. He was also an entrepreneur and developer of Tangilena Village Shopping Center, but will be most remembered for his spirited discussions regarding area politics and his devotion to his family, his friends and his community. Dr. McClendon was predeceased by his beloved wife of 51 years, JoAnne Carpenter McClendon; parents, Dr. Jesse H. McClendon Sr. and Elizabeth Reiley McClendon; and brother, Robert Spec McClendon Sr. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by his loving daughter, Judge Page McClendon Anderson and her husband, David D. She was 81. Visitation at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home, Ponchatoula, on Wednesday, Feb. 1, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. and in the chapel on Thursday from 8 a.m. until religious service at 10 a.m. Interment in Mitchell Cemetery. She is survived by two sons, Lionel McClendon and John McClendon, both of Ponchatoula; two daughters, Elaine Dunaway and Ellender Berteau, both of Ponchatoula; seven grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Archie McClendon; two daughters, Pam McClendon and Virgie McClendon; parents, Lawrence and Florence Hunt Taylor; three sisters, Sally Harper, Edith Thomas and Rachael Meyers; and two brothers, D.L.
