A certified nursing assistant and a foster grandparent at Levi Milton Elementary, she passed away after a long battle with cancer at 11 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, 2003, at her residence in Livingston. She was 63 and a native of Independence. Visitation at Seale Funeral Home, Denham Springs, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. until religious service at 1 p.m. Sunday. Burial in Beech Ridge Cemetery, Denham Springs. Survived by four sons, James McCray, Maxwell McCray and wife Donna, George McCray and Edward McCray; two daughters, Marilyn Hennesy and husband Rickey, and Allie McCray; two brothers, James and Aldophus Warren; three sisters, Norma Warren, Marie Anthony and Sophia Allen; 15 grandchildren and five great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father, James M. Warren; mother, Velma Warren; a son, Roy E. McCray Jr.; two brothers, Rodis and Gary Warren; a sister, Janice Stilley; and a grandson, Jean Andreas Ricaud. Memorial donations may be made to Trinity Hospice in Baton Rouge. *************************************************************************** Obituary published in The Hammond Daily Star on: 10/6/2006 McCRAY, ELIZABETH MILES Elizabeth Miles McCray, 80, a native of Heflan, Louisiana, and longtime resident of Hammond died at her home October 3, 2006, at 9:30 a.m. A graduate of the Grambling State University, she was a retired Tangipahoa Parish school teacher who had been teaching for 42 years. She was a member of the Eastern Star Chapter No. 46, Order of Eastern Star, Prince Hall in affiliations Louisiana Jurisdiction. She was the Third District Bogue Chitto vice president of Mission No. 2. A faithful member of the Saint Paul Missionary Baptist Church, she served as deaconess, worked with the senior mission, was vacation Bible school director, a member of the senior choir, church librarian, and Sunday school superintendent. Active in the community, she engaged in organizations that exemplified a concern for the well being of others. She was a member the Theta Theta Zeta Chapter of the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, the Martha Adams Alumni Chapter of Grambling State University, the Altruist Social and Civic Club and the Martin Luther King Jr. Park Association. Survivors include her husband, Leon "Blue" McCray of Hammond; three sons, Gilbert Leon McCray of Austin, Texas; Clifford Wayne McCray of Lafayette and Donald Lynn McCray of Hammond; nine sisters, Beaulah Mac Coleman of Grambling, Helen Cobb of Richmond, California; Dorthy Thomas of Kearny, Missouri; Ruthy Newell of Grambling, Jean Davis of Rodeo, California; Betty Miles Dyson of Compton, California; Linda Gail Coleman of Moreno Valley, California; and Janell Coleman of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. She is also survived by four brothers, Charlie Miles Sr. of Richmond, California; Billie Miles Jr. of Carson, California; Joe Miles Sr. of Simsboro and Milton Miles of Shreveport; and eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Family members preceding her in death were B.C. Miles Sr. and Mae Lizzie Pearce Miles, Veora Gibson and Sue Willie Miles Crosby. After 30 years, he retired as a State employee for Southeastern Louisiana University. As a faithful and longtime member of Saint Paul Missionary Baptist Church, he served at the Chairman Deacon and was actively involved in the community. Leon "Blue" McCray is known as a Historian of Black History in the community. Leon "Blue" McCray coached baseball for over 30 years; he also owned and operated a seni-professional baseball team "The Hammond Berries" and baseball field located on Crystal Street. During the time of his coaching, he produced many professional baseball players. He served in World War II as a First Class Seaman in the United States Navy. HeÕs a member of the Oak Grove Lodge #117 of Hammond, Louisiana, The Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge, F.&A.M. of Louisiana. Suriviors include three sons, Gilbert Leon McCray (Judy) Austin, TX; Clifford Wayne McCray (Jacqueline) of Lafayette and Donald Lynn McCray of Hammond, Louisiana; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.
