Samuel McCrea Jr. was born August 12, 1930 in Mobile, AL. He was one of eleven children and eldest of four sons of Florence Watts McCrea and Samuel McCrea Sr. of Mobile, AL. He accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Delaware Baptist Church of Mobile. He attended Emerson Jr. High and later transferred to a private school, Allen Institute, which was privately owned by Josephine Allen. His first year there he met his wife Alice Cooper of Ponchatoula, LA, in 1947. They fell in love with each other and had a wonderful relationship. Later he was drafted into the US Army in 1951, leaving his love one behind. After going through basic training, he spent a tour of duty in (Europe) Germany. He was attached to 547th Engineers, building bridges across the Rhine River. After his tour in Europe he returned to the U.S. February 1953. He then reunited with his sweetheart Alice O. Cooper and rekindled their love and married March 31, 1953. His next duty assignment was in Korea in 1955. Next duty assignment was in Germany in 1960 and returned in 1963. In 1967 he severed in Viet Nam and again in 1971. Upon his return one year later, February 1972, retiring twenty-one years with Honorable Services. Samuel McCrea's life work was in the engendering, culinary, dietician, cook supervisor, receiving, culinary field inspector. With an MOS of 94B20 and a ZULU50. Instructor in all phases of food preparation. His hobbies were bowling, gardening, landscaping his yards, loved working with various tools, and maintenance around their home. They shared their life together until his death on February 22, 2013. They were married for 59 years and eleven months, and would have celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary on the 31st date of March 2013. They courted for six years before they married. Samuel McCrea Jr. was preceded in death by his mother Florence Watts McCrea; his father Samuel McCrea Sr.; three sisters, Alice Blackman, Ceola Boyd and Mazie McCrea; three brothers, Otis McCrea, James McCrea and Napoleon McCrea. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of fifty-nine years and eleven months, Alice O. (Cooper) McCrea of Ponchatoula, LA; one son, Samuel McCrea III (Mamie) of Marina, CA; one grandson, Samuel McCrea IV, of Highpoint, NC; three sisters, Rosetta Peagler, Deloris Perryman and Florence Ann Harris of Mobile, AL, Shirley Minor of Compton, CA; four sisters-in-laws, Ethel Porter, Ponchatoula, LA, Marie Buchanan, Columbia, SC, Catherine Anderson, Hammond, LA, Bernadette Anderson, Indian Head, MD; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. Family and friends will be received at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home in Hammond, Friday, March 1, 2013, from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Visitation will continue Saturday, from 10:00 a.m. until the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow in the Holly Gardens Cemetery in Hammond.
