A native of Amite County, Miss., he was born May 2, 1932, and died on Thursday, May 4, 2006. He was a resident of Independence and formerly resided in Metairie for 33 years. Deacon McElwee is survived by his wife of 50 years, Ruthie M. White-McElwee; son, Melvin M.L. McElwee Sr. and wife Sylvia; two daughters, Marian M. McElwee-Clark and husband Willie and Cassandra A. McElwee-Cotton and husband Richard; eight grandchildren, Michael, Durrell, Melvin Jr., Jermal, Millard, Malonda, Allen and Jordon; and two sisters, Adell McElwee, Milwaukee, and Idell Wells, Baton Rouge. Visitation at Zion Travelers Baptist Church, 165 Hickory Road, Independence, (I-55 N, Exit 40 to La. 40 E) on Friday, May 12, from 5 p.m. to midnight.
