Born in Chicago on Jan. 13, 1937, he was reared in Hammond and called Metairie home for 28 years until last year, when he and his wife returned to Hammond. Mr. McHale graduated from St. Paul's School in Covington and attended Marquette University in Milwaukee. A lifelong newsman, Mr. McHale began his career in journalism while serving in the U.S. Marine Corps. He also worked with the Vicksburg Evening Post and the now defunct Jackson State-Times. He continued his career with United Press International and The Associated Press. He was also a member of Paul E. Boyd Detachment 579 of the Marine Corps League. Mr. McHale was preceded in death by his parents, Edward Joseph McHale and Monell Bowman Baker McHale Schuhknecht; and a son, Patrick Temple McHale. Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth "Betsy" McHale, of Hammond; daughter, India McHale, of State College, Pa.; son and daughter-in-law, Martin McHale and Melissa Kaye Knight McHale; and granddaughter, Lillian Grace McHale, of Houston; brother and sister-in-law, William Bowman Baker and Bobbie Lee Baker, of Baton Rouge; sister, Patricia Marie McHale Darden, of Atlanta; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. McHale donated his body for medical research to Tulane University Medical School. A memorial service, officiated by the Rev. Paul M. Bailey, of Hammond, will be held Saturday, Sept. 1, at 1 p.m. at the chapel of Christ Church Cathedral, 2919 St. Charles Ave., New Orleans. Honorary pallbearers are members of Paul E. Boyd Detachment 579 of the Marine Corps League. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests gifts be made to Grace Memorial Episcopal Church in Hammond or the American Lung Association. ***************************************************************************
