McMichael, aged 74 years 7 months and 3 days. She was born in Orange Burg District, South Carolina, and was one of the early pioneers of this country, having immigrated with her husband to this parish about 1817. Mrs. Elizabeth McMichael had a philanthropic heart. She was always willing and ready to assist the poor, needy and afflicted, and nothing was (five words illegible) to alleviate their distress or sufferings that was in her power to do for them. Her home was always open to accommodate the wearied traveler and disconsolate invalid when it was difficult for them to find a resting place elsewhere. She was for more than the last 50 years a moral and exemplary member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and thus by her death the church and community in general has lost one from among their midst, whose place will not easily be filled. "But he that giveth taketh away," and sooner or later such will be the end of all mankind. He was a man known for his keen sense of humor, for his quiet dignity and for his unswerving loyalty to those he loved. A lifelong resident of Tangipahoa Parish, Mr. McMichael, 82, was born at home on July 18, 1921, to George and Virginia McMichael of Amite. The third of five children, he worked on the family truck farm until graduating from Amite High School and enrolling at Southeastern Louisiana College. It was during his third year at college when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, prompting Mr. McMichael to enlist in the U.S. Navy. He was commissioned an ensign and joined the crew of LST-580, a landing ship deployed to the South Pacific theater. The ship and crew participated in several major invasions, surviving repeated attacks from Japanese kamikaze pilots. Mr. McMichael participated in the invasion of the Lingayen Gulf on the Philippine Island of Luzon and the invasion of Okinawa. The crew was training for the invasion of the Japanese mainland when the war ended. Following the war, the ship spent several months transporting Japanese soldiers to the Japanese mainland, and Chinese soldiers up the Yellow River back to China. Following the war, Mr. McMichael enrolled at LSU, earning a bachelor's degree in animal science. He returned to Amite, where he joined his father in converting the family business -- Pineview Farm -- from truck farming to dairy farming. In 1952, he married Norma Marie Nystedt of St. Charles, Ill. Together they had four children. In 1957, he got out of the dairy business and joined the staff of Anderson Gravel Co. as a foreman and bookkeeper. He worked at Anderson Gravel and then later T.L. James Gravel Co. until he retired in 1987. Following the dispersal of the dairy herd, Mr. McMichael, along with his father and brother, started a commercial beef herd which was eventually replaced with a purebred Aberdeen Angus herd. This herd was nationally recognized as one of the finest small Angus herds in the country, repeatedly winning awards at top Angus shows around the region. This herd was dispersed in 1990 when Mr. McMichael retired from farming. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Virginia McMichael; a sister, Mary Elizabeth McMichael; and his son, David Robert McMichael. He is survived by Norma Marie McMichael, his wife of 52 years; a brother Philip McMichael; two sisters Sarah Lou Wilson and Ora Belle Compton; his children, Robert Wilson McMichael II, Nina Ruth Briley and Timothy George McMichael; and by five grandchildren, David Nathan McMichael, Molly Allison McMichael, Heather Marie Dalton, Ashley Ann Briley and Robert Wilson McMichael.
