He was born May 31, 1918 in Ponchatoula, the son of the late Francis Joseph and Caroline Anthony McMurray. He was retired U.S. Navy Chief Boileman, having served in World War II and the Korean Conflict. Mr. McMurray was a member of the American Legion Post #47, Knights of Columbus Council #4878, Past Grand Knight and Past Faithful Navigator, and a Fourth Degree Knight, Fr. Martin Assembly #0323. Surviving are his wife, Gertie Chenvert McMurray of Slidell; 9 daughters, Dr. Mary Anne McMurray of Henderson, Ky, Arlene McMurray Elston of Owasso, Ok, Margaret McMurray Cuccia of Metairie, Janet McMurray Farace of Ponchatoula, Barbara McMurray Opdenhoff of Ponchatoula, Rita McMurray of Ponchatoula, Marcia McMurray Selph of Fayetville, N.C., Joan McMurray Hoover of Lutcher, Irene McMurray Labue of Metairie; 4 sons, Bernard C. McMurray, Jr. of Sierra Vista, AZ, William McMurray of Tyler, TX, Frederick L. McMurray of Ponchatoula, Patrick McMurray of Orlando, FL; 1 brother, Francis McMurray, Jr. of Harahan; 3 sisters, Blanche Stasswender of Austin, TX, Carrie Nelson of Austin, TX, Isabell Charbonnet of Gainesville, FL; 25 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Saxon Shewalter McMurray; one brother, Fredereick McMurray; and one sister, Frances Stilley. Friends will be received Wednesday, September 21, 2005 at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home in Ponchatoula from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m., and after 8 a.m. on Thursday until 9:45 a.m. Services will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Thursday, September 22, 2005 at 10 a.m. with Rev. Justin Kauchak O.P. officiating. He was 74 and a native of Ponchatoula. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Visiting at Welsh Funeral Home, 6700 Florida Blvd., from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, with recitation of the rosary at 7 p.m. Visiting at the funeral home from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Thursday. Religious services at St. Jude Catholic Church at 10 a.m. Thursday, conducted by the Rev. David E. Allen. Interment in Resthaven Gardens of Memory. Survived by his wife, Katherine Dwyer McMurray of Baton Rouge; three daughters and a son-in-law, Mary Beth McMurray of Fort Smith, Ark., and Pat and Gino Davis and Shirley McMurray, all of Baton Rouge; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Michael Dwyer McMurray of Baton Rouge and Rick and Rita McMurray of Lafayette; three sisters, Isabel Charbonet of Florida and Carrie Nelson and Blanche Stasswinder, both of Texas; two brothers, Bernard McMurray of Ponchatoula and Francis McMurray of Harahan; five grandchildren, Betty Katherine Michell McMurray Thomas, Tara Lynn McMurray, Anthony Michael McMurray, Christopher James McMurray and Alyse Danielle McMurray; and a great-grandchild, Blake Thomas. Preceded in death by his parents, Francis J. and Caroline Antony McMurray; and a sister, Frances Stelley. Pallbearers will be Anthony M. and Christopher McMurray, Blake Thomas, Daniel Dwyer Jr., Fred L. McMurray and Gino Davis.
