She was born on November 15, 1926 in Tangipahoa to the late Lee Cook and Lena Green Cook. She graduated from Tangipahoa Parish Training School in Kentwood in 1945 and attended Hampton Institute in Virginia for one year. She married the late Otis Taylor Mearidy on November 3, 1947 in Washington, D.C. at the Federal Courthouse Building. Eleven children were born to this union. She was a housewife and community activist and enjoyed traveling, reading, cooking for her family and friends and being of service to others. The family would like to thank the staff of the Isocare Nursing Home in Glendale for their excellent care of Mrs. Mearidy during her two-year illness. She is survived by four sons: Otis Phillip Mearidy, Lake Charles; Billy Ray Mearidy, Tangipahoa; Felix Mearidy, Tangipahoa and Don Mearidy, Houston, Tx; six daughters: Elaine Mearidy Fultz, Tangipahoa; Debrah Mearidy Jefferson, Los Angeles, Ca.; Michelle Mearidy, Columbus, Mo.; Judy Mearidy Taylor, Lancaster, Ca.; Frances Mearidy Cook, Kentwood and Celeste Mearidy McNulty, Bogue Chitto, Miss.; one daughter-in-law: Willie Jean Mearidy, Tangipahoa; one stepdaughter: Mary Moore, San Antonio, Tx.; four sisters: Jessie Mae Cook, Rose Burnadine Cook and Ora Lee Cook, all of Tangipahoa and Mildren Brown of Kentwood and a special cousin, Doretha Dillon of Los Angeles, Ca. She also has three godchildren: John Cockerham, Jr., Covington; Cheryl Fultz, Magnolia, Miss. and Anita Gant, Kentwood; 41 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. She is preceded in death by her husband, parents, one son: Demetriaus Mearidy; two brothers: Major Cook and John Taylor Cook; five sisters: Tella Williams, Esther Dumas, Frances Womack, Irma Jean Hookfin and Beulah Addison; one half-sister: Betty Mae Cook; father-in-law and mother-in-law: Ernest and Odeal Smith Mearidy; one grandchild: Felicia Jannelle Fultz; grandparents, uncles, aunts and other relatives. Visitation will be Friday, May 2 at N.A. James Funeral Home from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday, May 3 from 9:30 a.m. until the funeral service at noon. Internment will follow at the Brown/Quinn Cemetery in Tangipahoa. *************************************************************************** Obituary published in The Hammond Daily Star on: 10/12/2004 MEARIDY, DEMETRIUS Tangipahoa -- U.S. Air Force veteran Demetrius Mearidy, 51, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004. He was a maintenance superintendent. He is survived by his wife, Willie Jane Mearidy of Tangipahoa; five daughters, Natasha M. Shanks of Kentwood, Fredricka, Lorinda and Demetria Mearidy, all of Tangipahoa, and Tyneisha McClendon of Greensburg; one son, Tarquin Mearidy of Tangipahoa; seven sisters, Elaine M. Fultz of Tangipahoa, Deborah Jefferson of Los Angeles, Michelle Mearidy of Columbia, Mo., Judy M. Taylor of Lancaster, Calif., Frances M. Cook of Kentwood and Celeste M. McNulty of Bogue Chitto, Miss., and Mary Smith of Hammond; four brothers, Otis P. Mearidy of Gretna, Billy Ray Mearidy and Felix Mearidy, both of Tangipahoa, and Don K. Mearidy of Fort Worth, Texas; nine grandchildren and two step- grandchildren. His father, Otis T. Mearidy, preceded him in death. Visitation will be Friday from 2 to 8 p.m. at Angelic Funeral Home, Roseland. The funeral will be Saturday at Quinn Chapel AME Church at 11 a.m. conducted by the Rev. Marshall Holiday.
