She is survived by one son, Bernard Melton of Hammond; six daughters, Ferrydean Grice of Slidell, Annie B. Wilson, Roena Matthew and Linda Willis, all of Amite, Audry M. Frazier of Livermore, Calif., and Lavan Crayton of Garland, Texas; one sister, Roena Beasley of Fresno, Calif.; one brother, Edgar Melton of New Orleans; 20 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joshua and Annie Melton; seven brothers, Bennie, Godfrey, John, Ivey, General Fate, Moses and Hollis Melton. Visitation will be Tuesday at Gordon Richardson Temple of Deliverance COGIC, Amite, from 5 p.m. until Samuel Richardson conducts the funeral at 7. Dismissal will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Turner Chapel Cemetery, Greensburg. Richardson Funeral Home, Amite, is in charge. ************************************************************************* Obituary published in The Advocate (Baton Rouge) on: 2/19/2013 MELTON, VERA ESTELLE FREEMAN Mrs. Vera Estelle Freeman Melton died at Ochsner Hospital on Thursday, February 14, 2013. Mrs. Melton was the last child of Fred and Alma Freeman and she born in Amite City, LA. She was preceded in death by her siblings Mrs. Gladys Nash, Mrs. Alicia Howard and Mrs. Mary Thornton. Mrs. Melton was a graduate of McDonough 35 H.S. and Southern University where she received a B.A and a M.A. She also attended Xavier University. She was united in matrimony to the love of her life Leroy J. Melton, Jr. and to that union were born 2 children Leroy J. Melton, III (Gayle) and Michael F. Melton, (Marietta Woods). Mrs. Melton is survived by her grandchildren Langston, Melton, Leronne Melton and Lena Melton. She is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, two sisters-in- law, other relatives and friends. Mr. Melton was an Orleans Public School Teacher for 35 years.
