New Orleans -- Judge Henry Alvan Mentz Jr., senior U.S. judge of the Eastern District of Louisiana and a former resident of Hammond, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2005, at his home. He was 84. He was a sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II and earned combat infantry medals with Bronze Stars. He fought at the Battle of Bulge and served the 65th Infantry from 1943 to 1946. He was a member of Christ Church Cathedral and also served as senior warden at Grace Episcopal Church in Hammond. He was a graduate of Hammond High School, Tulane University having earned a bachelor of arts degree in 1941. He graduated from Louisiana State University Law School in 1943 and was admitted to the Louisiana Bar that year also. Mentz served as city attorney for Hammond from 1954-61. He was a member of the Hammond Rotary Club, past president of the Hammond Red Cross Drive and Parish Shrine Club, past chairman of the March of Dimes, a member of the Commerce and Industry Committee of Hammond, a member of the Scottish Rite Consistory in New Orleans of Jerusalem Temple and a Hammond Chamber of Commerce member. While practicing private law in Hammond from 1946 until 1953, his history included Mentz & Ford in 1953-74; Mentz & Cashe, 1976-81; and Mentz & Gorrell, 1981-82. His employment also included working for Monroe & Lemann in 1943; Columbus & Florace Reid, 1946-47; as staff attorney of Shell Oil Co., 1947-48; and as assistant to executive counsel to the governor of Louisiana in 1948. His lifetime achievements include a scholarship to Tulane University where he graduated with honors. He was recipient of the Distinguished Services Award from the AMVETS in 1950 and the Delta Tau Delta Fraternity. As honorary chairman, he was awarded the Louisiana Civil Service League Award. In 1942 through 1943, he was honored to served on the Board of Editors of the Louisiana Law Review and the Chief Justice Honor Court at Louisiana State University in 1942. Mentz, was a member of the Louisiana State, Federal, American and International Bar associations and was president of the Tri Parish Bar Association on the North Shore. He served as president and member during 1974-1976 of the 21st Judicial District Bar Association, as well as chairman of he Louisiana State Bar Standing Committee on Indigent Defenders from 1980-81. He was a member of numerous civic and social organizations and served on numerous boards as well. He was past president of the Louisiana Lodge 102 of Free and Accepted Masons and 32nd Degree Masons. Survivors include his wife, Lamantia Mentz; five children, Dr. Henry A. Mentz III, Ann Mentz, Carli Mentz Tessier, Charles Sherwood Mentz; and 10 grandchildren. Visitation will be Wednesday at Christ Church Cathedral, 2119 St. Charles Ave., from 10 a.m. until the funeral at 11 a.m. Burial will be at Grace Memorial Episcopal Church, Hammond, at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the New Orleans Salvation Army, or a charity of one's choice.
